Hi ,

does anyone know if my Asus p4b 800 (megahertz) series motherboard will handle a dual core processor or does it only work with the 5 series motherboards.

I tried to chec online with intel & couldnt find any info on my compatibility with my board. I just bought 2 gigs memory & would like to enhance it even further. Anyone know if I need to upgrade my motherboard & if I can use the new memory or do I need to upgrade the board & the memory as well.

Thanks

Sorry to say your mainboard cannot use any of the new processors. All modern processors need a mainboard which has an socket 775, your mainboard has a socket 478.

It will be hard to buy any processor upgrade for an socket 478 mainboard, I know of some shops who still sell Intel Celeron 2.53Ghz for socket 478.

Hey, the exact situation I was in. I also had an Asus P4P800 with 2GB of memory, and wanted to use dual core. Unfortunately, only certain socket 775 (not all of them) support dual-core CPUs, and the only available 478 CPUs now are celerons. You could change the mainboard to a 775 board that supports the old DDR memory (currently it's DDR2), but it would be cumbersome, and only a few mainboards can do this. You would also need a board that supports 4 sticks of the old DDR, which is pretty rare. What I ended up doing was selling the old components and buying entirely new. A bit expensive, but you get performance in return.

Here is a list of boards that support Core 2 (the current dual-core Intel CPU). None support 4 sticks of old DDR.

Thank you very much for the info, now I know why my shop I go to said it was not compatible at least I was smart & got a 2.8 prossesor at the time. It actually is very fast now. I can install 40 gigs of music in 22 minutes now instead of almost 2 hours. I wish i would have asked these questions 2 weeks ago before I bought The extra gig of memory.

Do you remember how much it cost you to upgrade & 2 gigs memory?

Thanks again Firefox
