Big Oud" explains navy personnel transfer to IB after leak - says no favors were granted

Thailand's chief of immigration Lt-Gen Sompong "Big Oud" Chingduang was forced to explain matters after leaks that 41 navy personnel were to be transferred to the IB, reported Daily News yesterday.

 

Many police oficers want to work at the bureau because of "higher allowances" but felt they had been sidestepped to allow navy men access to lucrative posts. 

 

Lt-Gen Sompong claimed it was all above board and welcomed media questions. 

 

He said there were no favors being offered and the maximum benefit to the country was paramount. 

 

He explained that 27 patrol boats were purchased by the IB several years ago to be involved in crime suppression activites and movement of tourists in Regions 3-6. 

 

The navy men would man the boats making up for a shortfall in manpower and they would also be involved in maintaining the vessels. 

 

He said there was only one batch being transferred and they would work on the boats not at places like checkpoints.

 

Criticism came from policemen who said that knowledge and skills tests were being overlooked to bring the navy men into the IB fold.

Surely the navy is the correct military group if 'leaks' are involved.

Prepping for the transfers to submarines in the IB.  "Up periscope"," I see them captain they are walking across the river".  "Damn, we can not get to them, call in the gun boats". "Why can't we call China and have them release more water", "What and act like we can't do our job, no way"

Question: Do the navy guys have to hand over a brown envelope to the senior IO to get the job, as the police do?

Probably sucks to get re-directed from the gravy train to patrol boat duty in regions 3 - 6 wherever those are.

Probably because Navy seamen generally know more about handling small boats and boat maintenance than the average IB or BiB.

 

OTOH The IB Police know more about immigration matters than the average sailor.

It is hard to make a call on that. There are supposed to be 27 small boats and 50 sailors. About 2 sailors per small boat. They are to be deployed according to the OP in regions 3 to 6. He explained that 27 patrol boats were purchased by the IB several years ago to be involved in crime suppression activities and movement of tourists in Regions 3-6.

So qualified navy personnel employed to man & maintain the boats are being criticised by policeman who only want to join for the "perks" ???
