Foreign drunk drivers are teaching English to the staff of the Department of Probation on the island of Koh Samui.

Probation chief Witthawan Sunthornkhajit said it was part of a fun and useful community service plan.

One of the teachers is Mr N (an assumed name) a German who is aged 70 who said he was excited to be able to teach English, a language he is comfortable with.

He said he was not able to do much else and it was good to find a use for his skills.

He appeared to be running a 24 hour course as part of his DUI punishment.

The staff said that the foreigners were enthusiastic and teaching things like grammar, greetings, conversation and specific legal terms.

Thai business media called it a great idea.

I think I'd rather pay the fine!

Wonder if they change them to a voluntary visa to make it legal for them to teach. Lol

Are they allowed to sober up first?

I'm trying to imagine Thais speaking drunken, slurred English...

Is a Bachelors degree required?

Good idea to use retired, and other, foreigners to teach the government staff some English. However, it's almost impossible for a retired to volunteer for almost anything without complicated paperwork and/or work permit – perhaps I should begin to drink, before I'm driving...????

Innovative, retiree friendly, and useful. Win-win.

How?...Why?...... are people so tolerant of people who drink and drive???...It beggars belief.

Two week old baby killed in London today, not confirmed as drink/drive....but can you begin to imagine what the parents are going through????

Get a grip.....they are drink/drivers.

Surelynot, they broke a law. Yes there is the potential for ANYONE behind the wheel to kill someone, and nobody is denying that d-ds can kill, but the peeps sent to teach English are not killers, they are traffic-law violators...

Is this somehow personal for you?

No because it is voluntary, they only need a monger degree!

This is a good idea since it forces offenders to give something back to society. A better idea would be to make them volunteer in some form of unpleasant community service since that would be a deterrent to repeat offending.

This may be more unpleasant than you think... ????????

if they are British, this would be a huge mistake mostly because the Brits no longer have a grammar.  for instance, drink is a noun or a verb.  it is NEVER an adjective.

perhaps they should be more specific and learn a pragmatic language, before the tourists come back ! oh, Chinese, be better watch out !

They broke a serious traffic law, and as such should be deported in my view,. They, we, I, are guests in Thailand and need to obey the laws. Let those caught without seat belts, crash helmets, road tax and the like remain in Thailand and let THEM do the teaching!

Some 30 years ago in Pattaya a foreigner was seen swinging a cat around by the tail. He was apprehended and hit by another foreigner. Guess who was deported? The cat swinger is still here!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I know, and the use of i and f at the start of a sentence is 'I' and 'F' ????

Seems everyone is happy with this idea, so why the negativity?

I don't know what's the situation on Samui nowadays, but perhaps if they fixed the taxi mafia problem people would be less inclined to take their own vehicles on nights out.
