4 days ago the daytime mossies we bleeding me dry, having read Dengue fever articles about daytime mossies i got a bit worried, i have been using DDT wipes, but moving dripping sprinklers ect soon washed this off,

Mrs asked mr Poo [our ocasinal helper on farm who runs around in wellies, shorts and a t-shirt} how he avoids getting biten, roughly translated, he said he rubs some cowshit on his son, this keeps all the mossies, flys and insects off him!!! cant think much of his son or he was joking??

Anyway, done a search in the TV health forum, came across dettol and olive oil, 50/50 mix, rub it on skin, tight clothes areas ect, little on sweatband, had both these things at home, done a mix, rubbed it on and i havent been bitten for 3 days, it seems water resistant and sweat resistant, I can sit outside early evening eating and having a cold beer, mrs and friends are thrashing about like they caught fire!! but now they have started using the mix, and are well impressed,,

Any of you good farmers use this or have a better detterant? Cheers, Lickey..

Ewelve - thought you got banned for your moderator and rice farmer comments. Anyway, welcome back. Yes, the ants are out in force this time of year. Must be the rain that brings them around. If the small black ones are the mot kan get out the spray. The bite doesn't hurt but the swelled skin and itching lasts for days. The small red ones, mot daeng fai. Ouch, hate the little bastards but luckily the pain only lasts a few minutes. More spray! For the big monster red ones, mot daeng, just have some local come in, raid the nest eggs, and sell them at the local market.

Lickey - also sorry to have past up this post. I get so bummed when I post and get zero response. Must be my writing skills. Anyway, we smother the dogs with olive oil every night to fight off the mosquitos. It works. Never tried adding Dettol to it though. For myself, I sit with my Chang to watch the sunset with the fan blowing right at my legs and that's all I need. Normal mosquitos only come out at dusk and dawn so if your getting bitten during the day those are the nasty ones and be careful. Another remedy that I have tried and works well is to crush some ka tai hohm roots and then mix them with lao see sip. Rub it on and wholla. I'd say about 80% effective. Don't do it anymore myself though, as the workers had tears in their eyes everytime they saw me use the see sip in this manner.

have a squiter free day

Lots of mozzies where I am too right now and the yung fest is driving us to distraction. We are using the mozzie coils you buy at 7-11 which generally work OK although I am a bit concerned about the level of toxity.

As for ants, we've had armies of the buggers lately too. My wife had her old lady send down "da rua gon fai" or "shock!" as the locals call it (10B, sold in yellow packets, chinese made). Since we put that around the house we have had no more problems with ants. Again I am a bit concerned with the danger levels of being exposed to this one too. As for controlling the ants outside I have no idea.

We only intend to use mozzie coils and shock until we get out of this extreme patch. If anyone knows of any glaring danger issues with either product would appreciate if you could let me know!

Hi posters, hey, dont worry about overlooking posts, it happens!!,

I must admit the mixture i use 50/50 dettol and olive oil does make me smell like a pox doctors clerk but it does work extremly well, its from the Health forum on here, just enter mosquito reppelant and search, another good one for the ladies or men is Avon skin so soft bath oil, this is supposed to work well too, Dettol is a well known anti=septic, i also pour a cap full down the house drains which dont have a U-bend, this stops them getting into house/toilet ect,

Ants, mmm this is my first rainy season here, and we also have a plague of ants in the kitchen, but only the tiny black ones, Mrs buys Shock too, chalky stick thing and rubs it round base of sink and food areas,

Back in UK after the harvest was finished, and all all sorts of insects would look for refuge, Father used to mix petrol and diesel together and spray on the nests, bit of a cruel death for them but highly efficent, the petrol would kill them and the diesel stays in the ground a long time, which the ants didnt like 1 iota, so they never came back, I would think in small doses on tree nests, it wont harm the trees, wotrh a try i rekon,

Good Luck with this, Lickey.

diesel is very bad for all plants and stayes in the soil for ages. I know a few cowboy gardeners back home that use it to keep persistant weeds at bay , bad Idea if you give a shit about the soil. i think in uk its illegal to for that same reason. I've also been told by locals to use it to poison unwanted trees where cutting them down will get you in trouble with forestry officials.

Hi EP, I agree with you about the Diesel, Dad was a top gardener and would only use diesel around the house foundations and paths ect, specially in the cracks in the concrete, also very good for keeping weeds down, but definitely keep this away from garden/plants, Fireing an ants nest with petrol is good to, even if you dont ignite it, it certainly puts them off for a while, Cheers..

Hi Rust, We used mossies coils last october, in every room, i was fine but after 2 weeks mrs started getting rashes on her forearms and neck, throat dryness, lethargic ect, after a visit to the doc, he suggested stop using mossie coils, after a few days she was back to her normal self, The Shock for ants ect is fine, as with any chemical, just wash hands afterwards,

Cheers, Lickey.
