A 36-year-old Cambodian won big even without buying a lottery when he became the 1,000,000th person to be injected with COVID-19 vaccine in the Kingdom and received an award of five million riels (USD 1,250) from Prime Minister Hun Sen. The announcement was made yesterday by the Ministry of Health, and the award money was delivered today to Panh Savannarith, 36, a grocery store owner at Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district, by the ministry’s Secretary of State and spokeswoman Or Vandine.

Savannarith went to get jab at Santhormok School, Sangkat Toek Laak on 11 April 2021 and was recorded 1,000,000th person to have volunteered to be inoculated in Cambodia. The award has been seen by the public as the premier’s incentive to push more people to get vaccinated, the core of the government’s strategy to combat COVID-19.

“I would like to ask the people to volunteer to receive the shot to prevent the severity of COVID-19, as well as to reduce the chance for hospitalisation and mortality from this deadly disease,” Vandin wrote on her social media pages.
