Report on the new restaurant alcohol sales ban and earlier closing times being considered by the government today for 18 provinces:

COVID zoning system adjusted to just Red, Orange to reflect current situation

"Thailand’s National Communicable Disease Committee has revised the COVID-19 zoning system, in line with the worsening situation, by dividing the country into just Red and Orange zones, instead of Red, Orange, Yellow and Green.

According to the committee, which met Thursday under the chairmanship of Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the number of Red zone provinces has been increased from 5 to 18, due to the current surge in daily infections.

...

Under the new zoning, all bars, pubs and massage parlours across the country will be closed, including those in 41 provinces already closed for 14 days since last Friday.

Eateries in the Red and Orange zones are not permitted to sell alcohol to their customers and may only stay open until 9pm in Red zones and 11pm in Orange zones.

Third wave not expected to subside until June

"Internal discussions within the government and the public health ministry suggest that the current wave of the pandemic will not be brought under control until June, sources told Thai Enquirer on Friday.

“Even if the country were brought into a lockdown immediately, the Songkran travels have likely made the situation much worse,” said a source in the health ministry who requested anonymity.

“Internal discussions say that in a best case scenario, we will have the situation under control by late May to early June,” the source told Thai Enquirer by phone."

Late May to early June? That is great news! It will be right before the 4th wave in July.

Today's daily province by province report of new domestic COVID cases, followed by the comparable report from yesterday.

The provinces are listed in the order provided by the MoPH, based on their total/cumulative numbers of reported cases thus far, though the actual numbers shown below are latest day case reports. Both charts exclude the imported cases found in quarantine for those days.

"The Ministry of Public Health is urging people in high-risk areas to work from home for 2 weeks to curtail the COVID-19 cases that are expected to skyrocket after the Songkran Festival.

Department of Disease Control (DDC) Director-General Dr Opas Karnkawinpong said even though work from home measure is in place, 483 cases per day are expected in the next month.

He said the number is still high so the DDC is going to implement additional measures to deal with the current condition, adding that the fast-spreading UK variant has been detected in new infections, with the majority of cases found among teenagers and working adults."

PS -- My wife's company in BKK, which had gone to a work from home policy just before the Song Kran holidays, informed staff today that they'll be working from home for the remainder of the month.  The company has told employees there have been multiple positive cases among them thus far.

Also an idea. I know it's late but why was the water splashing banned? They should of encouraging people to change the water to hand sanitizer in their water cannons. Prayut has already demonstrated this new method on reporters. It was his greatest idea during the pandemic but didn't materialize. Why?

This is all tragic news, something we all wanted to avoid. Its with us now in full vengeance and we can do nothing but keep our personal measures in place for our own safety and those of our loved ones

They approved yesterday that covid patients can now go to specific hotels (some are same as quarantine hotels) to get better.  Only ones with minor symptons

They have a chart out today talking about 5,000 "hospitel" (hotel hospital) rooms... But totally unclear how many of those are actually up and running at present.

More bad, dangerous, stupid behavior...

17 medics at Samut Prakan hospital isolated after patient lies about contact with an infected person

"Seventeen medical personnel at Samut Prakan provincial hospital have been quarantined after a patient failed to disclose information about his contact with a person infected with COVID-19.

The hospital said, in its Facebook post today (Friday), that two doctors, nine nurses and six other medics, who were in close contact with the patient in question, have had to enter self-isolation, depriving the hospital of badly-needed medical staff.

It warned that any patient who refuses to provide information about previous contact with an infected person will face legal action and will be liable to a maximum fine of 20,000 baht on conviction."

Indeed although as we also know, hospitals are getting overwhelmed and in many cases positive cases are being asked to quarantine at home for a few days until beds are found for them, this from your previous post a couple of days ago, so no doubt the shortage has increased since then

And with the well known Thai fortitude for personal discipline, those that are " waiting " for a Hospital bed, are not going to Isolate in the correct manner at all.

May as well just let them do what they want, as this is want many will be doing.

And in the meantime, the shortage of beds will only get worse.

Well Tourism is more important to these folks even though they claim it is only a small percentage of the GDP.  Have to be ready for the July 1st hordes of millions that are set to arrive.

Clearly (or not), they mean that number of BEDS, not that number of hospitals. It's the ole' TH-EN translations thing.

A couple of updates:

A Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman announced this afternoon that their televised/online EN COVID news briefings, which have generally been done only M-W-Fs, are going to become daily starting tomorrow/Saturday because of the escalating COVID situation in the country.

AND

Man, 38, becomes first fatality in Thong Lor cluster

A 38-year-old man in Tak province has become the first person to die of Covid-19 spread by the Thong Lor cluster, the province's Public Health Office said on Friday.

According to reports, the patient visited Krystal Club in Bangkok's Thong Lor area on March 19. Krystal Club has been identified as one of the hotspots behind Thailand’s third wave of infections.

The patient, who worked as a programmer, died at Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat Hospital in Tak’s Muang district.

It doesn't look good.  Over 10,000 still in care and a bunch on ventilators.  Wow.

Now the big problem.  What happens when ICU bed are full and one of us has an accident requiring treatment?  Ugh.

And that exactly is the problem all around everywhere . I have said it 1000 of times already , the deaths are just a number , which we try to avoid , but it simply isnt always possible , due to several reasons . The real problem is that others who do need medical assistance , take up room in hospitals , and that room just isnt there . This also creates the problems for others who do not have Covid , but need medical assistance also .

Cases stable....still no exponential growth. A good sign.

I think you need to read up on how exponential growth in viruses works, it's the doubling rate, be it 1 day, 4 days etc. Thailand seems to be in a 4-5 day rate. Even if it a seven day doubling, just do the maths and see how it adds up over a month. Covid is still producing a R1 of above one that means it's still spreading.

The reality of being hospitalized when you've got a moderate to severe infection, there are 67 serious at the moment in hospital and 17 on ventilator as of today I think was reported.

I don't think they're set up to handle every COVID case, or even every serious COVID case, that way.... But it sure would be interesting to know where that photo was taken and in what kind of situation.
