What SARS-CoV-2 variants are in Thailand, please? (That’s a question; thus, any "leaks" yet?)

As the SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads from person to person, the virus evolves, producing variants that may evade treatments and vaccines, and possibly re-infect people who have natural immune responses from prior infection. Identifying and understanding these genetic variants rapidly, along with sharing the information globally as quickly as possible, is vital to ending the Covid-19 pandemic. Most existing global genomic surveillance efforts are ad hoc, siloed, and inadequate to meet the demands of a rapidly changing virus.  - The Rockefeller Foundation

It is a complex , evolving situation.

There is plenty of info about the first wave.

"during the first wave of the outbreak in Thailand between January and May 2020 were investigated. Forty samples were collected at different time points during the outbreak, and parts of the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence were used to assess genomic variation patterns. The phylogenetics of the 40 samples were clustered into L, GH, GR, O and T types. T types were predominant in Bangkok during the first local outbreak centered at a boxing stadium and entertainment venues in March 2020. Imported cases were infected with various types, including L, GH, GR and O. In southern Thailand introductions of different genotypes were identified at different times. No clinical parameters were significantly associated with differences in genotype. The results indicated local transmission (type T, Spike protein (A829T)) and imported cases (types L, GH, GR and O) during the first wave in Thailand. Genetic and epidemiological data may contribute to national policy formulation, transmission tracking and the implementation of measures to control viral spread."

However that was last year.

I doubt large scale even siloed research is a MOPH priority.

There has never been a real Wuhan style lockdown and untested people are still entering the nation as crew, illegaly or by sea.

IMHO unless a scientist the imprtant thing is to isolate and get jabbed asap.I must add I have no bioscience qualifications, but would not use social media for serious medical advise or counsel.

UK strain for starters, thats why the virus cases are  now up around 2 thousand, if they don't rip it into gear,  it shortly will be 5 thousand and so forth.

Yes, I saw that the powers that be had revealed at least the B 1.1.7.

In the U.S., the Rockefeller Foundation recently launched a plan to develop a national genomic surveillance network for viruses.

From their news release:

When significant mutations occur, there is a need to understand their biology at the molecular level and determine how these changes in the virus impact its transmissibility, its virulence, or the effectiveness of vaccines and therapeutics against it.

Thus this seems fundamental: how can transmission be effectively stopped (and likewise businesses know what the future may hold) without specifically knowing what is at hand.

Currently,  there are 5 major variants in the U.S., . What variants are in what was the most popular destination for Chinese tourists?

Rubba,

Nice synopsis.

Need not to say: An ounce of Prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

Its apparent to me, until Our government begins to understand good sanitation and sterilization  practices..... (and teach the people to use anti bacterial soap hot water, as well as bleach or Amonia)we will continue to have waves of out breaks from surface and physical contact.

Unfortunately while there is one person who is out there without immunity ie vaccine,  no prediction can be made on any normality or out comes. Perth, my place of origin at present has done a complete emergency lockdown (again) because of TWO community cases one is suspect super spreader. That along with vaccinations is the only way to curb out breaks otherwise you'll end up like India, the heard method doesn't work, the bigger the heard the worse it gets. Australia is virtually virus free but sacrifices have been made( IE International Travel) and a lot of people and businesses have suffered.  Like or lump it we will eventually have to live alongside Covid 19 as we do with AIDS and SARS.

And lets us not shirk responsibilities , we must thank China for their part in all of this.

Since the virus first emerged in Northern Italy, maybe you should thank them.

I don't believe they really do much sequencing here.  Until that's done, at a mass level, we have no idea what variants are here.  The UK is doing a great job with the.  The US, not so much, but getting better.

For now, we know the UK variant is here.  It slipped in from Cambodia and is also a bit of a variant.

One other got in, but was detected in quarantine.  So hopefully, was never spread.

India is the big problem now.  Mutations are cropping up all over, including a double mutation.  Very scary what could happen there.

The US has a few new ones also.  NY, California and now Ohio.  There are thousands of mutations.  Sadly.

Let's just hope the Brazilian one doesn't get here.

Akin to other virus they constantly adapt, the virus like us is trying to survice so adapt to its environment.

While it may become endemic and no known cure like the common cold, we may also adapt so that otherwise healthy people have mild bouts and there are better techniques, drugs, treatments for those most at risk.

Of course its very hard to make large profits from really poor old people without wealthy offspring which is why all developed nations except the USA have socialized the risk so we pay in when young and healthy and pool the risks.

For those without large resources, self help , avoiding risks, hygiene and keeping well informed and educating yourself about your body has seldome been easier.

I do not include social media in education where many unqualified opinions gain traction, Morning Czar excepted of course.
