Naew Na reported that a truck carrying pipes sideways went from Samut Prakan east of Bangkok to Sadao on the Malaysian border without anyone fining the driver.

 

Both oncoming vehicles and those coming up behind it had to take evasive action to avoid an accident.

 

Somporn, 32, was at the wheel and Prayoon, 41, was in another truck coming up behind. 

 

In an effort to explain his actions Somporn said that he couldn't put the pipes lengthways, they would only fit sideways. 

 

But, he told the police in Sadao, he left on May 22nd in the afternoon - "so that people would see him in the daylight and it wouldn't be dangerous". 

 

He claimed to have vehicles both in front and behind him warning other motorists of the unusual load. 

 

Netizens went ape wondering how no police on a 1000 km plus journey wouldn't fine them or charge them with anything. 

 

It was only in Sadao when they were spoken to. 

 

The incident hit social media when the truck with the pipes was filmed on the main Asia Highway in Chumpon, about half way to their destination at a construction site.

 

When the police caught up with the drivers they had already made their delivery.

Makes sense to me. I remember about nine years ago when a truck with a massive oversized pipe demolished a Sapanloi that went across Borom. After the big 2011 flood, the highway engineers raised the level of Borom to help guard against flooding. But they forgot to adjust downward the clearance level on the road signs.

Impressive. Sometimes I can't even get from Chiang Mai to Lamphun without running into a checkpoint.

yes, such operations are police supervised, in a convoy. Police makes a suitable route.

After this accident police simply run away from the place. Afterwards they claimed they were in shock or such

Police only works when they can give tickets with no receipts.... all the rest of the time looking on their phones.... I see it daily at the roadside.. police car standing aside and doing nothing.. drivers speed, don't hold any distance .overloaded pick ups etc etc.. they all pass without being seen

Put this man in charge of the vaccine rollout. He said he would get those pipes on site, a man of his word 555555 About as smart as the fella running the show now. 

Expecting to police to take any notice of situations like this is just a pipe dream.

 

The driver deserves a metal for outstanding driver skills and a jail sentence for ignorance for carrying such a load.

Reminds me of that old Frank Sinatra song ' I did it sideways '.

Like the driver stated,there was no other way to load them,can any of these so called experts,Thai bashers on here see the other end of the load,maybe they've been welded to another even longer piece which is protruding forwards,I know I've carted plenty of oversize loads.

What rubbish you have posted, maybe you have carried over size loads, but with a police escort or other safety measures in place.

This di##head just drove on the highways with total disregard for other road users safety.

But mate, you did it in Australia with suitable trailers with placarding and escorts. If it's too big to fit safely on a conventional flatbed, you don't use a conventional flatbed do you?

 

I once drove a Kenworth oilfield bed 5th wheel with a Cat D7, a spare ripper blade, a Toyota BJ-45 and a couple of Briggs and Stratton generators on the low-boy across the northern part of the Tsaidamu Pendi in China. This on nominally 4 m wide dirt roads cut between yardangs and around ridges. Over the un-escorted 10-hour drive, I only managed to force half a dozen oncoming Chinese 6-wheel 'powerwagons' off the road when they found out too late that, "Oh no! He's not pulling over!" or, "Damn! He's got a trailer behind him!" Fun times!

There are checkpoints and speed traps. But have you ever seen police stop a vehicle for a moving violation?

If you look at the pics in the link I think you'll find that the would have fitted lengthways on a normal flat bed with the appropriate signage and a following safety truck, the driver is a dick, end of story

I wonder what the pipes were for? A police project? A Prayuth project or some other important person's project? Sometimes that gets a free pass.  Now, the drug smugglers know how to move their stuff without getting caught as they do everyday. No use complaining these days as anything goes in Thailand. Just make sure your car is low enough to go under one of these rigs.

Well, they certainly pull people over in Esarn if their stickers are off and the used to for speeding. I got pulled over a couple times in the past. I've never seen them chasing a speeder or the people(like me) that just keep driving when they try to wave them over on the highways.

 

Maybe the truck had one of those big gold medallions that says forget the rules special privilege here.

Gotta assume there were no toll booths along the route.

Plenty times. On Highway 7 south to Pattaya (and previously on the old Sukhumvit 3), the RTP highway patrol cars were always pulling over trucks. Most times they pass the truck slowly, pull ahead then turn the strobes on and park up on the hard shoulder before getting out and flagging in the truck they just passed.

The driver used the lamentable lack of traffic law enforcement here to deliver the load and get paid.

 

I reckon he was a clever dick.
