Thousands of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand are trying to get home, according to Leung Sophon, an official at the Centre for Alliance of Labour and Human Rights (CENTRAL) in Thailand. Many of the workers have been living in Thailand for two years, unable to return since the Covid-19 pandemic began more than a year ago.

Deb Vith, a construction worker, said: “If the government helps me, I will be happy to return home since I have left my family in Cambodia since 2019.” He said he misses his family but doesn’t have enough money for the journey home.

Ream Roeun, also a construction worker, said that after living in Bangkok for four years, he doesn’t want to return to Cambodia yet because he is making more money than he would at home. He said that he can make $16 per day in Thailand but only $13 per day in Cambodia.
