BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has allocated 2.8 billion baht to support COVID-19 vaccine research and development and the building of infrastructure, to support vaccine production, in order to develop Thailand into a regional hub of vaccine production.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said the money has been allocated to the National Vaccine Institute (NVI) which, in turn, has provided funding to support research by state and private organizations, including BioNet-Asia, to develop and manufacture DNA vaccines, and the National Science and Technology Development Agency, to develop prototype vaccines for clinical trials.

According to Mr. Anucha, Baiya Phytopharm Co, has also been provided with funding, to conduct tests on locally-made, plant-based COVID-19 vaccines, there is funding for the National Biopharmaceutical Facility (NBF) to prepare a COVID-19 vaccine production facility, money for the Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) for vaccine packaging and support for the GPO-Merieux Biological Products Co, to expand its industrial-scale vaccine production capacity.

Other organizations to receive funding are the Vaccine Research Centre, the National Primate Research Centre at Chulalongkorn University and Siam Bioscience.

Complete waste of money on the research side, learn by rote education is not compatible with  research, this will yield sweet f all, except some nice jobs for some general's daughter/son.

The bulk of this could go to fixing the education system or merely implementing western research into covid - this seems to be freely shared.

A day late and a dollar short.

Actually  two years late.

Perhaps they can also start research on a measles vaccine while they are at it.

PS: who is the guy in the picture? He looks very happy.

He must be in charge of the funds allocated for the research.

Maybe they should asked the Chinese government which pandemic they would release on the world community next and get in ahead of the game with a vaccine, then they might be onto a winner
