I assume you writing about a extension of stay (it is not a visa) based upon marriage to a Thai.

The extension is for the 90 day permit to stay you got from a non-o visa. Nothing is changed other than your permit to stay date.

I am not sure I understand your question, but these are the two strategies typically used in the past and the differences:

  • Multiple entry Non O visa from an embassy/consulate:
Each entry into Thailand gives you a 90-day permission to stay. You can extend this by 60 days to visit your wife, but must then leave and re-enter Thailand for a fresh permission to stay.
  • One year extension of your permission to stay based on marriage to a Thai:
You have a permission to stay of a full year. Every 90 days, you must do address reporting to Immigration. If you want to leave Thailand and return, you should apply for a re-entry permit before leaving.

You applied for a extension of stay at immigration not a visa.

The only visas immigration issues are 90 day non immigrant visas and they are stamped as used as soon as the 90 day permit to stay is stamped in the passport.

After years of getting extensions, and have recently applied for new, yesterday Immigration rang me to say "your visa is ready"  ????.

no wonder some newbies get confused when even  immigration call an extension a visa. ???? just saying.

I think they say visa since they think people will not understand what a extension of stay is since some people call every stamp and sticker in their passport a visa.

So its us that they think won't understand, how very kind of them.

I was once asked by them ''how do you say pass-a-port in English" ???? Oh and the ferry is not a ferry its a boat as it was pointed out to me.

Personally I think the word Extension, may be a bit difficult to say for them going by their grasp of english, having said that my Thai is <deleted>. I once mistakenly asked for a return stamp, confusion all round, "can not" then I realized I meant re-entry. Ho Hum.

Yes, it is frustrating. It happens, I believe, because "weezah" is much easier to say than "ektenchun".

Yes, I think you're right about that.

In addition, the word "visa" is also used in Thai (วีซ่า), making it more convenient for a native Thai speaker, for whom I would suspect that "extension" to be somewhat of a tongue twister.
