Another good place, with fresher bread, is the Kasem store. They have 2 branches, one just off Chang Moi Road and another on Nimmaheiman Road. They don't have as large a selection of stuff as Rimping but they might be easier to get to -depending on where you are staying...

I dont think you’ll find a better Indian in Chiang Mai. Clean, good prices and they do home delivery.

Don’t wait give it a try UG!

Yes I've been three times, wrote a short review in the eating in Chiang Mai thread. I like the food and the ambience. It's owned by Thais of Indian/South Asian descent, an interesting family (and the owner likes a good chat). Don't try the masala tea, they don't know how to make it properly.

I have always believed that if there is nothing good to say then better nothing said

BUT

My first visit to Le Spice wasn't the culinary experiance i expected after reading 1 or 2 posts here, saying that i had gone with a couple of friends after a night out drinking so put it down to "the beer" affecting my judgement and taste buds.

Last night decided to take the wife there and sober believing it couldn't really have been that bad after reading posts again on this thread but it really was that bad ! We had a biriyani, a vindaloo, safron rice, saag aloo, and a couple of naans none of which resembled anything i have eaten in any Indian restaurant anywhere before maybe the rice would pass as OK.The staff were friendly the atmosphere was good the place clean and inviting BUT the food at Le Spice was the WORST Indian food i have ever tasted.

Just my humble but HONEST opinion

Where is it ?

What type of food do they do ?

ps/ Thanks to your recommendations The Dukes is one of our favourite regular eateries now, always good food, good atmosphere and recommend to all and everyone i know.

well have to say went to Le Spice again last night and i still thought it was good i had the mutton which was a bit fatty but still tasty just my opinion.

and im a very fussy person when it comes to food, after all ive cooked most of my life in various places and owned my own resteraunt. i havnt tried the other Indian yet as i dont know my way around that well yet. as for the guy who didnt like the food there maybe he's used to the indians back home which in my opinion are very untraditional ?, only because i once had an indian girlfriend for over 3 years and what you get in a resteraunt back in blighty is nowt like real indian infact the indians call it gora curry implying its for beer swilling whites i believe.

Thanks much.

If you really want to check it out, The Chedi is also Indian and highly recommended by some TV members, however, it is also fairly expensive and you might not want to eat Indian cuisine again so soon.

It is on Charoen Pratead road (same road as the Porn Ping hotel) down near Piccola Roma Palace. It is a big, expensive hotel.

If you try it, please let us know what you think. :o

My personal favourite, amd the only decent Indian I have found to date, is the Stand or Royal Indian, which is about 50meters past the turning to the iron bridge on Charoenphratet road, just about opposite the Guitar Man. The place is not patricularly salubrious and could do with a major redecoration, but the food is genuine and reminicent of both India and some of the true Indian restaurants in central London.

It is a place to eat well, not a place to impress your wife/significant other! We have been going regularly for many years.

I have never tried the Chedi or Le Spice and will do so as soon as time and funds permit.

Beware of the indian above McD's. We ordered about six dishes plus rice and couldn't eat more than a small spoon of each. It was possibly the worst food, of any cuisine I have ever been presented in Chiang Mai.

Bad news, that was my favorite one in Chiang Mai also - The one that my Indian buddy brought me to.

It is now out of business although the owners continue to sell a few Indian dishes at the Sunday walking street. :o

I'm really surprised you didn't like the food at Le Spice.

I know from trying different Indians in Chiang Mai and Thailand each restaurant tends to put a different spin on each dish so that none are what you might expect from previous experiences whether it be Thailand or anywhere else.

I had given up trying to find a good Indian having tried the majority of them here, (most of them being just OK or worse) so I was really glad to have found this place. The taste of all of the food was very appertizing and enjoyable. Prices of the meals are very very reasonable especially the set menus, the last time I had something as good cost the equivalent of around 1700 - 2000 baht - so no complaints there.

One mans meat - another mans poison I guess :o

"Royal India" was pretty good and they cheerfully home-delivered. What a pity they didn't survive :o.

I agree with above comments about judging Indian (or any other Asian food) by the version you ate in your home country. (Esp. applies to Brits & curries :D ) . In particular, don't expect the huge chunks of meat & large portions you'd get in your motherland. That's not the norm at all in the original countries.

I have not tried Le Spice. According to a google that took me to CM Expats Club website :

Le Spice Restaurant

Indian, Thai, Seafood Restaurantat 31 Charoenprathet 6, T. Changklan, A. Muang, Chiangmai 50000. Phone : 053 234 962; 0811 720 482; fax 053 234 983. Email address is [email protected]; website www.le-spice.com.

10 % on Food & Drinks, Tandoori dishes, North Indian food, Southern Thai dishes.

(that discount would be for CM Expat Club members, obviously).

Anyone know if they will deliver ? The website is in Thai.
