Thailand’s unemployment rate at 5 year high

Job search platform JobsDB reported that the pandemic drove Thailand's unemployment rate up to 1.96% in the first quarter of this year.

This was the highest level in five years reported the firm's local manager Pornladda Decharatwiboon in an online briefing for the media, reported Daily News

It was driven by fewer migrant worker hirings.

However, such demand in the first quarter was higher than in the last six months of 2020 by 6.7%.

The IT sector had the highest proportion of job listings with the company at 9.6% of the total with manufacturing at 6.2%, wholesale and retail positions at 5.5% and jobs in financial services making up 5.4%

With the growth of job postings in the first half of the year improvement was seen in the electronics and electrical equipment sector followed by insurance, property development and financial services.

The most wanted jobs are in sales, customer service and business development followed by IT, engineering and marketing or public relations.

But the fourth wave of the pandemic struck a big blow to any improvements with postings down 23% from May to July.

This was particularly seen in food and beverage and manufacturing sectors. Only IT and telecoms postings showed an increase in that time.

A survey conducted in association with a foreign consultancy indicated that 50% of Thai workers were happy to work remotely, a figure in line with global stats.

Australia, Japan and Singapore were places that most Thais wanted to work for remotely.

Thailand was still seen as a desirable location for foreigners with special skills, the survey revealed.

But are they willing to study English (or Japanese) to be able to communicate with their clients at an acceptable level?

As for Thailand's unemployment rate, it seems to be pretty much meaningless, due to the sheer size of the informal sector.

Yes, and on top of that they talk about replacing humans with robots. Can only be better.

Obviously that figure is way off the real number. I'm sure there are studies having been done that have calculated a more realistic number but I haven't seen one in ages.

Seriously, that's all?

About 46 percent of Thailand’s inhabitants work in the service Sector... having recently visited many of former tourist hotspots I can validate first hand that the government unemployment statistics are complete and utter nonsense.

Interesting people

If a worker lose job in the city and go back to the village, he isn't unemployed but now a farmer. Never mind if the family has a 100 m2 garden.

Thailand love the creative mathematics. The more imaginary the more appealing to use.

Very true, they can't be including everybody. The opposition should produce some more realistic numbers

But the ones that are still employed shouldn't be, for instance people at TAT. And shouldn't Immigration scale down a bit....?

If they bothered to even attempt to include the cash economy here, the real rate is likely closer to 40%. The 2% figure is an insult to everyone. Diabolically fake news.

The economy is utterly decimated right now. All the foreign capital exiting Thailand is proof of that. And anyone with eyes to see, can surmise that millions who were working in tourism are out of work and upcountry playing cards.

So much nonsense. Who are these people and why are they considered credible sources of information?

Pull the other one, it's got bells.

Can't imagine the rate being that low.

Unfortunately, it hasn't peaked yet as I'm sure more places are going to go belly up.

7/11 could use some more people helping out. To be honest I don't think 6 or 7 of them in a store is enough. I couldn't find the milk the other day.....it was waaaaaaaay up the back. Luckily after much searching I was able to locate a helpful staff member. She lead me to the back....where I bought some milk.

Thats my story.

Thanks.

Agree, the cash economy does not pay taxes so those people do not exist. Up here that might be 80% of workers.

Thailand to launch space program.

Covid will be under control in 3 months.

Anutin becomes competent.

Prayuth gains credibility.

Thailand gets up to 75% vaccinated level.

Government helps the poor and homeless.

How about that?

"Thailand was still seen as a desirable location for foreigners with special skills,"

What special skills, more than 90% can't even speak basic English. I had trouble understanding their pronunciation.

Such bold face lies.

Synonymous with this government.

People in Thailand can read and see the news because of the internet.

They know the truth.

This government has failed them miserably.

That's asking a lot.

I think even those calling some of US doom-mongers find this bull hard to believe

It's a good start.

Unemployed or  UNEMPLOYABLE, because in  looking  for workers at Wifes  land wev'e found 90%  are  simply unemployable, lazy, stupid or  combination of  both but  in the most part  lazy, I'd say 1  in 10 are "normal" as in want to work, able to work  not  work shy and have  at least half  a  brain. The rest are slovenly, dirty even in their own house especially bathrooms, throw  rubbish everywhere despite being told  not to and depsite  being given  refuse bags and free  collection  of  rubbish, they treat the land like a waste  bin. Unable or  unwilling to do the  simplest of  tasks often extremely  careless damaging many things so making two  jobs out of  one simple  one. Greedy stealing items, fish, toilet  rolls, washing up  liquid , petrol etc. Many seem to  operate the same way and really they think we are too  stupid  not to  notice.

Just thrown the last pair  out, man was an alcoholic , woman bone idle and sneaky hiding in a corner of the land pretending to work etc yet actually  doing nothing at  all. They deserve  fully their krap life.

The woman was also smarmy saying things  like "thank you for employing us and giving us  this  opportunity" just BS and she thought  we believed  her.

Education will be the stumblingly block in Thailand for years.

How do you expect to break the pattern of unreported high unemployment, poor wages, systematic corruption with such a poor education system.

Foreign teachers would be helpful but hard with red tape and terrible wages.

Unemployed is endemic in Thailand unless you count drinking Lao Khao and napping all day.
