The Thai Mai Thon (Impatient Thais) political group lodged a petition with the Central Administrative Court today (Monday) asking it to hold an emergency hearing on COVID-19 vaccine procurement restrictions and to allow the private sector and local administration organizations to import alternative vaccines for use in Thailand.

Led by Dr. Kamonpan Chivapansri and Suradet Namjampa, the group accused Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattibhoom Vongrachit and Dr. Vitoon Danvibul, director of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization, of failure in vaccine management, resulting in shortages and suffering.

The group asked the court to issue an injunction to lift the state monopoly on the import of COVID-19 vaccines and to allow the private sector and local administration organizations to import them, citing the cases of Cambodia and Taiwan.

That should be a "no brainer"

Not sure the court can force the government to do anything unfortunately.

Too many "no brainers" is actually the root of the problem

All they care about is paperwork

It's the usual toilet syndrome in play, the jobs not over until the paper work is completed.

money number one - they control the vaccine procurement they control the budgets - they control everything and so far it has been a massive failure

Good of them to identify the players involved - a tidy list of names in that article for future reference

Sorry can't do, kickbacks can't be divided..????????

That presumes Pfizer and Zuellig/Moderna et al  would be willing to go with the arrangement.

It's more a situation of "no brain" here...

emergency hearing

Within a year?

This will go into the 'in' tray and straight to the 'out' bin !

Given what is ultimately and actually driving vaccine supply in Thailand, this will not receive a response.

Im sure private sector could do a bang up job of procuring, distributing and administrating vaccines than the govt could from seeing the "red tape" thus far. Let them make a little profit subsidized by the govt.   Private sector is more flexible, able to modify existing logistic pipelines quickly,  experienced in management/procurement and able to overcome bottlenecks in logistics. Govt could probably save money and serve the population better.

Sadly they couldnt give a flying @### about the general population and are only interested in self service.

Who are about to conveniently change the law so they can walk free.

I doubt very much if it'll even make the in tray...

Yes. I read somewhere that as long as a vaccine has only conditional approval status the manufacturers can only deal with government entities.

I don't know if it's true.

Anybody know for sure?

Months too late but at least it might offer a little embarrassment--although with this amnesty bill they seem to be pretty much beyond being embarrassed about anything they do.

It begs the question: why did Sinovav clear paperwork within days, while Pfizer and Moderna take months?  The only Pfizer doses in Thailand now came by way of donation—not purchase.

Why can't any of the five mentioned organizations not import the 20 million doses Pfizer..?

I have been reading months ago that the govt would allow private hospitals to procure vaccines. Now I think on it I think the wording was they will not stop the private sector from ordering vaccines. Kind of true because mechanisms were already in place that made it impossible. Man what is it with this prime minister, is saving face really that important given the ongoing cost of doing so.

Link to the preceding items on legal liabity? Has ànyone been actively resisting the import of vaccines?
