Thai police seeking spyware that will help it monitor chat applications

They can try to reach out to IBM and enquire about the "Streams" application which was originally developed for the NSA. I worked on version 3 of this application several years when it was installed at Sprint (an American telecom company) for fraud detection.

They can also reach out to an Israeli company called AMDOCS (also a telecom company) which is partially funded by the Mossad Intelligence Agency as they are highly skilled in data mining. I was working at their Champaign office during the 911 period when 60 Israelis were being held and interrogated by the US for their prior knowledge of the 911 attack, 12 of which were working out of the same Champaign office as me.

I see it as a way to threaten populace. Thais are now beyond hiding what they think.

Openly on fb under their true names they broadcast openly their views.

In millions.

Everything was already said by Anon Nampa and Penguin, broadcast life. Yesterday they were both arrested (with few others) on lese majeste charges.

#rumor in May was shared by 5.3mln people on twitter. And around same on fb and other media.

Protest groups on Telegram are in hundreds thousands membership.

The second reason, why they are buying these toys is corruption. The more expensive software (and it might be in $mln), the more bmw at general's garage.

They are utterly desperate to hang onto power, and access to the trillions of baht that likely generates for them. Using the LM and sedition laws shows how utterly intolerant of criticism these very small, very weak men are, that they need to hide behind and utilize these laws, to attempt crush the will of the people. The people will not tolerate these goons much longer. My theory is that the army brass already knows this, and are now forming an escape plan. Hopefully into exile, but far better, into prison.

They can fight a few tens of thousands. They cannot possibly beat many millions. And that is what we will see when this army created debacle is over with.

The time is coming, when this will no longer be tolerated. Just wait. The army is on it's way out. It could take awhile, and it could get ugly, though it will never get to the hellish level of Burma, as the Thai parents would never, ever permit that kind of genocidal behavior from their sons. You take out one more Thai, and you are forever disowned by this family. That is all it would take to bring about mass defections from the army ranks. That would sure be fun to witness. Are the pompous generals going to put themselves into harms way? Never. They do not have it in them, they are cowards.

The specter of a repressive, police military state is taking on more and more shape. Unfortunately.

allow me to remind to you that it is not allowed to mention the words "military state" or "dictatorship" on aseannow, and just mentioning those words might place you in a black list.

seriously.

i once SMS in thailand to a friend a message that mentioned the word PVSSY more than 20 times.

i wanted to see what will happan.

my phone was blocked for 30 days from sending messages.

Oh heck, any of the smart phones Iphones or Android that use the Cloud for storage are very open to being monitored.  Even Apple is talking about scanning files on the cloud, while not specifically excluding having the ability to scan files stored on the phones themselves.  Most countries have ways to monitor any and all traffic that goes through the network servers.   How much is done with or without proper court orders, legal wire taps, etc.  is a whole large topic in itself.  Heck even chats on Youtube that people engage in are extremely open to peeking into.

They already use such software so this is an extension of even more, that is certainly concerning in that case. Happy I paid GoldenFrog VyprVPN premium for 3 years upfront on a black friday deal last year.

I guess it will help once I can get the Starlink here, then I do not deal with local providers at all.

A VPN will do nothing in case of Whatsapp, Telegram and Line. These chats are attached to your account, regardless of your digital location. They can see the content of your private messages

you can open a watsapp account on a prepaid phone no., this way stay annonymus.

illegally, you can use other person identity to register a phone no.

i think that was the case when a thai elderly was sentenced to few years in jail for

posting anti monarchy messages.

to his defance he claimed that he never used a smartphone and does not even know

how to send SMS.

So much missinformation here..

First off, governments don't get to decide what they want to track. Vulnerabilities do. You can't just decide to 'track whatsapp', or any other messenger application. That's not how it works. They are all peer to peer encrypted. Reference software is called Pegasus because it's a trojan. It has to be installed locally to work. You want to be safe? Get a phone no one uses like Blackberry. No one writes trojans for it because no one uses it. Highly customised android probably will do as well.

There are ways around it. VPN is NOT one of them. These trojans don't get installed 'over IP' lol. 'Just install VPN'. No that's not how any of this works. I'm baffled by some people here recommending their VPN's, what names and talk about discounts as if they are selling them #AD.

These trojans use vulnerabilities like webkit or iMessage. Meaning they get installed when your phone either processes (receives) a message or when you visit a certain page. Using a VPN for this situation is like building a wall when the attack is from above. It's a remedy for your feelings but practically absolutely useless

I really wish some people would just stay silent when they don't know anything about what they are talking about. You are scaring people with completely wrong information and give wrong solutions that don't work

very well said

they are installed when people install and app (like a govermnet app) that has permissions to do just about anything on your device which is why I have no government apps on my phone, there is obviously other trickery used - people need to be really careful what they install - they can easily let stuff in through the backdoor so to speak, the government could use popular Thai games etc to piggynack spy software onto a phone

LOL. I think they monitor Line already. Next!

If they monitored my Line, then they would have locked me up long ago. ????

Besides, my wife is the only spyware I need. She knows everything about my actions and whereabouts.

These three words say it all “prevent political protest”.  The government does not want to be challenged or held accountable for their dismal record.

Yes, raises a question though. Isn't political protest perfectly legal in Thailand?

Most VPN companies are either owned by China or countries with weak or no internet privacy laws.  They don't care if your using it to watch banned streaming sites, porn or buying drugs online just don't organize an anti mask or white lives matter protest.

As not PC as it is to say this, white lives do not need protests. We have been ruling the world now for so many centuries, that we are the last ones in the world who need to be spoken for. Anyone who thinks otherwise is living under a very thick cloud of delusion. And I say this as a white man. And please, do not be intellectually lazy and call me a racist. Any white person has the right to call out his race, just as any black or Muslim would.

Ahh let the the paranoia commence!

As stated in the article, this is about organized crime, not grumpy old expats bickering on internet forums.

There are no more organised in crime than the RTP so effectively they will be spying on themselves I presume????

That's seriously dark in a dystopian sorta way.  Now you have to worry about the Thai government hacking your computer for the greater good.  And of course, once they compromise your system so they can monitor you, your system is probably wide open for other cyber attacks.  Yep.  Grand idea.

Monitor not only your devices, but both mic and camera wherever the devices are if they want to. "Private" conversations in your home, car, office.
