Such an approach is definitely not possible now. Many years ago, there were services that would take your passport to a land border for new stamps, but that was discontinued long before Covid. At the current time, an official would have a hard time explaining how they could stamp in someone at a closed border, and without transporting the individual to a quarantine facility.

First, a retirement extension is easy if you can afford to keep 800k baht in a Thai bank account.

That said, I would not have suggested it in 2019. If you check your calendar, it is now 2021, and the world has changed, It is unlikely that travel will be as easy as it was for a very long time. Mourn the demise of the METV and of border bounces, if you like, but do not bother bringing them up when advising people on an appropriate course of action under the new realities.

People who are risk takers could plan to arrive in October on a single entry tourist visa, assuming they will be able to stay significantly longer using Covid extensions. Personally, I think Covid extensions will be gone (at least without an embassy letter) by some time later this year. For those who want to gamble, go ahead. You might be lucky.

It's not JUST keeping 800k in a Thai bank. Every single person doing it knows this.

I agree with you, that's why I'm trying to understand if the non ED Visa or learning muay thai 1 year Visa is even a real thing or just a scam or even has a lot of hurdles and requirements.

Non ED visa is an option, although personally I couldn't be arsed with it. I haven't been in Thailand for a couple of years but I know the best option used to be Non ED for learning Thai, but I've been told the going rate was about 35-40k baht for this visa a year ago. Don't know if the prices have changed recently. Regarding the METV, this is definitely not an option at the moment. Crossing borders with quarantine restrictions isn't feasible. The best option would be the Special Tourist Visa if it gets continued, unless you want to stay for longer than 270 days. Just make sure you're double jabbed and have £5k/$7-8k in the bank for the application.
