Despite lockdown of all illegal border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand, human smugglers still active

Featured Replies

Provincial governors in at least four of the seven areas which face long and porous borders with neighbouring Thailand told Khmer Times that while migrant workers inflow was contained during the lockdown, illegal efforts and crackdown against these activities continued unabated.

“In Pailin, we have 29 illegal crossings and one official crossing. We are working closely with our Thai counterpart, in this case, Chanthaburi provincial governor in Thailand to completely shut down the illegal crossings while preparing to receive legal crossings since the 13th of August.

“However, on both sides of the border, our security forces as with the Thai border security forces have detained scores of attempted crossings by well organised human smugglers who often cheat the poor workers who just want to earn a wage to feed their families of their money. This money is often borrowed from relatives or informal money lenders and when they are caught or abandoned on the border by the smugglers, the brokers, the poor people are back to where they started,” says Ban Sreymom, governor of Pailin city last weekend.

Monet to be made... it'll never stop.

What will work is amnesty for migrant workers, shift to legal status in return for coöperation with FREE quarantine and FREE vaccination. Then the migrants are FREE to make money and keep all of us safe.
