People suffering from high blood pressure account for most of the fatalities from coronavirus infections, compared to those with other underlying health conditions according to the Disease Control Department.

 

According to medical reports, 17% of COVID patients, who are also suffering from hypertension, are likely to develop an abnormal heart beat, 7% an infection of the heart muscles and 9% of circulatory failure, which will lead to heart failure.

 

This group of vulnerable people needs to be vaccinated, so that they will have sufficient immunity to protect them from severe illness or death in case they are infected with coronavirus, said the department’s deputy director-general Dr.Preecha Prempree, adding that people with high blood pressure can still be vaccinated.

High bloodpressure is a deadly killer, but I have never read in the western newspaper that it is more deadly with Covid. That is a Thai invention I think

Being forced to wait for a decent vaccine, isolating at home on the sofa is not helping things.

Just search high blood pressure and Covid.  Plenty of information out there that those with high BP are twice as likely to die.

Young adults with high blood pressure are also in high risk group. If a young adult die from Covid, he is most likely has medical condition such as high blood pressure. 

Do they take treated high blood pressure into account?

 

Is someone who doesn't actually have high blood pressure because they're treating it still at increased risk?

Not one of the 7 underlying conditions. Why not?

 

I have hyper tension (high blood pressure) but it is controlled by taking medication every day.

Should people be required to have a health and fitness pass in order to eat fatty food? They are a huge liability to the health system.

 

How many of the younger Covid deaths are for people who are obese? Thailand is in better shape than most western countries.

Me too, my BP always reads about 120/80 so it's never high, in fact this is the optimal range for Blood Pressure but if I stopped taking certain drugs daily I know it would rise far higher than this.

 

So I do have 'high blood pressure' but it's never actually higher than the optimal range.

If you think that fatty food makes people fat then you're in for a bit of a shock if you ever figure it out.

It doesn't necessarily. Fast food is a big concern.

I suppose the same could be asked for Coronary Artery Disease, specifically those who may have had a stent but addressed the cause and have it under control.

There are some of us (like myself) who are well over 60 who have blood pressure that is slightly below average for our age group ( ie similar to that of someone 20 to 30 years younger, ... and a VO2max of someone 40 years younger) so this sort of news for us is a confidence booster. It helps reinforce in our minds that our efforts to stay fit and eat healthy when even in our late 60s are paying off and should help a bit wrt surviving this virus.

 

So I, for one, are happy that they post such news articles.

Same here. I take my daily med and it is always 120/80. I  did a search for " Blood pressure covid 19" and got the following information for the Mayo Clinic  

"Research has found that people with uncontrolled or untreated high blood pressure may be at risk of getting severely ill with COVID-19. It's also important to note that people with untreated high blood pressure seem to be more at risk of complications from COVID-19 than those whose high blood pressure is managed with medication. "

Averaging 100/60/60 give or take for this 61 year old every morning, who has a stent could be a blessing in disquise me thinks, although it could be the meds keeping it under control, although I eat healthy and exercise when the wife is up for it ????

mine fluctuates in the day ,its never stable into the bad zone and then good zone

 

peter sellers BP was 300/200 thats why he dropped dead at an early age,he wudnt have wanted it any other way

I'm over 60 with grey hair, and I just had my 1st AZ shot... better have a beer quick before I peg-it.

The danger of Covid to people with hypertension has been well known for quite a while, and yet Thailand - bizarrely - was testing the blood pressure of those coming to vaccination sites and refusing to vaccinate anyone with elevated BP.

I have controlled hypertension.  Got covid at 49 and spent over a week in the hospital.  I still have mild complications 6 months later. 

Not surprising,  As Thais goes majority are poor from my observation living with locals watching their eating habits with very little education I've always felt a great majority have high blood pressure and sugar levels but don't know it many never go to the hospital until it is too late. I wouldn't be surprise many going to get their shots fill out the form regarding health check majority NO?

My BP was low till I was in my 50s, when it started to creep up to middle range, where it stays now at age 72.

 

But reading this thread may have deleterious results ...

 

 

When I went to get my first shot in the arm they never even tested my blood pressure or weighed me. I am 74 and on bp pills and over weight I get my 2nd AZ on the 5th Nov.

As with so much else in the vaccination rollout here, this makes a mockery of what they're doing. I don't know about the mass vacination places like Bang Sue, but all the hospitals seem to insist on taking your BP before they will give you a vaccine. If they regard the reading as being unacceptably high, you're told to sit and wait for a while to relax and allow it to go down to normal. In theory, if it doesn't go down to whatever they regard as an acceptable level, then they will turn you away unvaccinated and tell you to come back. I've heard of this happening to a Thai lady, but not to any expats so far. But why bother if BP is such a major risk, surely it's best for people to get vaccinated against Covid regardless of how high their BP is. You could even argue that people with abnormally high BP should have the waiting period for the second dose reduced (from 12 weeks in the case of AZ) to help give them maximum protection ASAP. Instead, they're refusing to vaccinate the group they now claim are among the most vulnerable. Ting tong, or what?

If they want to reduce high blood pressure in retired expats, they could stop pushing the Baht up so fast.  More than 1% a day is quite worrisome.

Breaking news, very ill people may die.
