BANGKOK (NNT) - The Pheu Thai Party has countered a call made to the Election Commission (EC) by Sonthiya Sawasdee to dissolve it for supporting anti-government protests, assuring the EC that it has only worked within the political realm and seeking to penalize him for harassment.

Pheu Thai Party issued an announcement following Sonthiya request to the EC to dissolve it, citing a Facebook post by party member Chaiamorn Kaeowibul stating the group gave financial support to political protestors.

The party accused Sonthiya of not adequately researching his grievance and submitting insufficient evidence, pointing out that the actions are an indication of his intent to harass the party. It is to take legal action against Sonthiya, which could result in him being fined, imprisoned and stripped of his ability to run for office.

The announcement confirmed the party has adhered to the political framework, democracy and peaceful practices, clarifying that it has no policy to provide financial backing to protestors. It nonetheless asserted that its members are free to join protests as they see fit under their own individual rights. It assured the EC it is ready to field any inquiries from the commission.

Meanwhile, after supporting constitutional amendment drafts through their third reading, the Democrat Party has geared up to draft new legislation on the election of MPs, holding its first meeting on how to work with the EC.

It expects to spend two weeks on its deliberations starting from when the drafts are submitted for royal approval on September 26.

The party also intends to propose amendments to laws on primary votes and public participation in parties. Due to the passed drafts not indicating a formula for calculating party-list MPs, the party is also planning to discuss the matter.

Welcome to Thai post coup politics.

Manifesto - Keep on trying to get opposition parties, who are deemed to be a threat to your illegally gained power, dissolved, using whatever pathetic means possible !

...and we shouldn't expect any changes within their devious schemes and unofficial policies.

Some are still dreaming and hypothesizing that the supposed upcoming elections will spark the change.

Good luck.

Hope the demonstrations hold fast and become stronger throughout the country.
