Officials race to divert water into the Gulf to prevent Chao Phraya overflowing

And if it is possible to divert the water directly into the Gulf, why don't they just do this every time to avoid flooding?

They divert the water via the Tha Chin, which flows to the west of Bangkok, but it only has limited capacity.

They did this 10 years ago. We were very thankful as this enabled us to live in a huge lake for 2 months..
