Border Protection Police Forces on Wednesday found 50 assault rifles, as well as ammunition, hidden in a pond on the Cambodia-Thailand border, in Kamrieng district.Battambang Provincial Police deputy chief Colonel Lim Putheara told Khmer Times yesterday that at about 9am on Wednesday, police forces from the 819th Border Protection Police Regiment, in cooperation with soldiers of the 53rd Military Division, discovered the cache.

Based on the Cambodian-Thai border, the men were patrolling through stream waters in a natural pond, located in Kamrieng district’s Trang commune, in order to guard the border and prevent people from illegally crossing the border to work illegally in Thailand. Col Putheara noted that while they were patrolling, one of the police officers discovered a large waterproof sack, which had emerged from the flooded ground in the pond.

He said that after finding it, they became suspicious and removed it from the water to inspect it. He added that after inspecting it, police found a total of 50 AK-47 rifles with 52 magazines, one heavy machine gun, one tripod, and 508 rounds of ammunition. “These weapons are old and we believe that they were buried in this pond many years ago, according to our preliminary investigations,” Col.Putheara said.
