Crazy Fact: Manila holds the world record for the most women simultaneously breastfeeding

Featured Replies

We have all heard of the Guinness World Records, which have had some very eccentric records broken.

For example, on Conversation, the current record stands at 54 hours and 4 minutes and is shared between Latvians Kristaps Štãls, who was paired with Patriks Zvaigzne and Leonids Romanovs, who was paired with Tatjana Fjodorova.

Or who has the most kids in the world?

Apparently Valentina Vassilyev and her husband Feodor Vassilyev are alleged to hold the record for the most children a couple has parented.

She gave birth to a total of sixty-nine children – sixteen pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets – between 1725 and 1765, a total of twenty-seven births.

They would need a very large bus to get around in !!!

Philippines World Record

Meanwhile the Philippines has a pretty unusual record too.

Apparently on the 4th of May 2006, 3,738 women in Manila set the world record for the most women simultaneously breastfeeding.

Apart from breaking the record, it was to expose and to counter the aggressive marketing of the baby food industry.

At the time, Nestlé was one of the four most boycotted in the world and was desperate to improve its image by linking to good causes.

Nestlé was targeted as it broke the World Health Assembly marketing requirements for baby foods more than any other company.

In the Philippines Nestlé promoted its formula as containing ‘Brain Building Blocks,’ suggesting it is important for brain and eye development.

So, although this particular Guinness World Record may sound a bit wacky, there was a serious side drawing valuable PR to the problem.
