Fees set for taxis hailed online: 60 baht minimum charge

An announcement confirming the charges for ride hailing services of taxis decided by the Transport Ministry has been made in the Government Gazette, reported Daily News.

The minimum fee for calling a taxi will be 60 baht. Passengers will have to pay 2 baht per minute if stuck in traffic.

The announcement comes after years of operation of firms like Grab when they existed in a grey area of the law.

They are now enshrined as legal.

Small cars hailed online can charge 40-45 baht for the first two kilometers plus a 20 baht fee for booking them.

Each subsequent kilometer will be 6 - 10 baht.

Medium sized cars will have the first two kilometer rate set at 45-50 baht then 7-12 baht per km. The 20 baht booking fee also applies.

Large vehicles are 100-150 for the first 6 kilometers then 12-16 per kilometer thereafter.

Small, medium and large vehicles can all charge an extra 2 baht per minute when idling in traffic.

Not sure anyone except the Millionaire visitors Thailand wants will be using these services, I just deleted Grab from my apps on my phone.  I will go stand on the curbside and flag a taxi down by hand

Agreed....    I’m happy to continue to use GRAB and BOLT and can’t be bothered flagging down taxi’s who half the time don’t want to go to my destination and rudely just drive off after I ask them, or

  • That's better than the 100 baht demanded by the so-called 'official' taxis (if they deign to take you.)

So is my Bolt car home going to be more?

Looking like it.....

How is Grab going to make money now?

Until now they took about the taxi meter rate, added their 25% fee to it and that was the price.

But now they can no longer add their fee to it because it's capped at about the taxi meter rate (at least the published numbers here look similar to the Bangkok taxi meter rate for me), the only way to do it now would to take the 25% from the driver, which would probably not be profitable for the driver anymore.

yes for a while it was cheaper than a MB taxi for a single person but 2 up I think it is still cheaper as the rip off MB taxi drivers charge double for 2x passengers

Grab has been more expensive than Taximeter since a few years.

The fees published here are cheaper than what Grab charges.

Well I only used Bolt for  the ride to or from home which is quite far,  and I would not use a MB taxi for that. It was great for a while to use Bolt, get a fixed price that was, to be honest, a bargain....haggling with taxi drivers prior (or their go-betweens) really was frustrating.

Will still use them to get to hard to explain places with minimal parking.  All of the best um... coffee shops still in operation during the pandemic are in discrete locations ????

I got a motorbike taxi home last night after consuming illegal beverages at a location the gumnt are trying to bankrupt.

80B and a 20B tip for circa 3km.  I'm alive and cheap at twice the price.

About time they raised the fees.  Although if they continue there attempts to scam, I'll continue to use GRAB at every opportunity.  Or simply drive myself, until covid has subsided a bit, then use  public trans again.

Agreed....    I’m happy to continue to use GRAB and BOLT and can’t be bothered flagging down taxi’s who half the time don’t want to go to my destination and rudely just drive off after I ask them, or because I speak Thai which means I’m not a tourist who can’t be scammed or want to charge 300 baht for an 80 baht ride - GRAB and BOLT remove the potential for the typical ‘Thai flookwittery’ and is just less hassle.

That said: I would like to see the flag fall for all taxis raised - its been a long time since Taxi’s have had an increase along with inflation, they deserve more - but I doubt this would be sufficient incentive to improve their general level of ‘customer service’ (I use that term loosely).

I told a friend about it and he is quite satisfied with BOLT.

He told me his ride from far out Jomtien to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital was 300 Baht on a "regular" taxi. He now used BOLT and pays about 100 Baht.

A BOLT is cheaper than a hired Baht bus (songtaew).

Thank the lord I use local transport, no need for taxi services.

I hope they shared the news with Pattaya taxi with the blue and yellow mob .

As for me, I got the cell number of an attractive Bolt driver and now just call her exclusively. We then negotiate the fare and it stays completely in her hands. I pay less, she makes more. To hell with these money grubbing thieves.

On the rare occasions I go to Bangkok (now only to fly out), I book 2 seats on the Jomtien/Swampy bus so I don't have to sit next to someone like me.

Don't be surprised if you book a Bolt ride and a blue and yellow shows up charging only Bolt fare!

Still cheap compared to the risks of driving with a skinful - if you could get a skinful.  ????

So the military police state, which can't even regulate or control itself, can just regulate and control private business pricing??? They never managed nor cared to regulate all those phoney "Taxi Meter" BS gouging taxis in Pattaya (and many in BKK). Never once in Pattaya did one of them ever use a meter. GRAB and BOLT finally put them in their true place. Always loved when they showed for my Grab/Bolt ride for B60 where they previously gouged at B300. I always walked away.

Thailand....dead set on mucking everything up. Land of Muck Up. Of course another letter that begins with "F" fits quite nicely too. :vampire:

Such a mucked up place they've made this. ????

My experience of Pattaya Taxis is they never use the meter and actually charge more than taxi's in the UK

Sounds like the days of almost free short Bolt rides are over. It was obviously too good to last.

My thoughts too. There are probably 'vested interests' in the way the normal current taxi companies operate. The usual smoke and mirrors. Even the lowly motorcycle taxi system is corrupt, so I'd be pretty certain that the taxi system is too, even more so.

We should have a poll. Is there anything in Thailand that isn't corrupt? But there would be no point as we know what the answer would be.

I agree, taxi flag fall and rate is criminally low, when ever I'm in Bkk, luckily rarely these days - I'm always happy to tip on top of the fare, and I always insist on the  meter- no meter, sorry no business from me.

Wouldn't need a taxi or Grab as I have a chauffeur. My watering hole is within walking distance so again, no grab or taxi.

Indeed they are. I don't think Grab will be too upset about this. And if you use JustGrab or similar you are told your charge before you get in. They're still well priced and very convenient.

I found Grab cheaper. The taximeters in Pattaya don't use the meter...they quote you a price and have a cover over the meter, and since they all did that, there wasn't much choice.

Before COVID, I had switched exclusively to Grab, and some of the drivers who used Grab service would recognize me even before I called, and give me the same rate. Recently, I've been using Bolt, so let's see what actually transpires pricewise!
