Bangkok observes World Environment Day

BANGKOK: -- To mark World Environment Day Tuesday, Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin participated in many activities as part of an attempt to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the Thai capital by 15 per cent by the year 2012.

Mr. Apirak signed an agreement with the Federation of Thai Industries and three educational institutions to promote the proper separation of wastes, and initialed an agreement with Toshiba Lighting Co., to promote public cooperation in discarding fluorescent bulbs in a proper manner to preserve the environment.

He later joined with officials of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) in planting 80 trees at Chatuchak Park.

Mr. Apirak led a training session for BMA workers assigned to care for public parks in the capital and presided at a ceremony designed to initiate new activities at three public parks here, including Chatuchak Park.

In the evening, the governor will preside over the opening of a garden on the outskirts of Bangkok and plant another 1,000 trees.

I think that these activities of the governor are most noble. Now, an even bigger contribution to World Environment Day might ensue if the governmental and military authorities in Bangkok stopped talking for a few days: this would result in an immediate decrease in the hot-air factor in this fair city.

Apirak to get tough on Bangkok pollution

'Ambitious' plan calls for greening, conservation and traffic measures

Apirak released a draft action plan for Bangkok that contained both soft and harsh measures such as planting trees, retro-fitting buildings with more energy efficient lighting and cooling systems, promoting carpools, re-newable energy and mass transit systems and preventing vehicles without passengers to enter traffic congestion areas.

"In the past four decades, the average temperature in Bangkok has increased by two degrees Celsius," Apirak said. "About 24 per cent of green house gas emissions in Thailand are from Bang-kok. Global warming has become an important issue for us in the urban sector, so we must to take the lead in tackling the problem."

The plan, now being released for feedback for 60 days, is set to be modified and implemented by August, Apirak said.

Noble ideals.

I wish him all success.
