More Chinese victims rescued from captors in Phnom Penh

Featured Replies

Ministry of Interior’s Penal Department in collaboration with the Phnom Penh police led by a Court deputy prosecutor on Tuesday arrested more than 50 Chinese nationals including the victims in the capital. Penal police officer Major Chuon Sothy told Khmer Times yesterday that they were arrested at about 5 pm after police raided a Chinese-owned-Condo in Tuol Kork district’s Toek La’ak I commune.

He said that police learned about the rented Condo in Toek La’ ak I commune after the victims’ relatives alerted them at the Penal Department. The victims phoned their relatives and disclosed the place where they were illegally confined. Maj Sothy said among those detained were the victims and suspects who stayed at the condo but they have yet to identify all of them, nor who are the victims.

The victims, yet to ascertain how many of them, were illegally confined in an attempt to extort money from their families in exchange for their release. “We will continue our investigations into this matter as we want to go deeper into this case to learn the mastermind behind this whole illegal operation and those linked with it,” he added.
