BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the lack of invitation for Thailand to attend the Summit for Democracy hosted by the United States will not affect the country, stressing that the Kingdom will remain committed to democratic values and human rights.

In a brief statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Spokesman Tanee Sangrat said Thailand is well aware of this gathering hosted by the U.S. President, however, Thailand is not concerned about whether the country would be invited because the decision falls within the sole discretion of the United States government.

The ministry has reassured that Thailand remains committed to the same level of democracy and human rights as other democratic countries. He also mentioned Thailand’s participation in other globally recognized events such as the Bali Democracy Forum.

At the parliament yesterday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai elaborated on his recent visit to Myanmar, which he called a humanitarian visit, because he was there to deliver Covid related supplies.

The minister commented that the Summit for Democracy is considered a new international politics platform spearheaded by the United States, adding that in some cases, not being invited is more beneficial.

If the government is sincere with committing to democratic values, amend the military drafted constitution or amend articles that provide amnesty to those taking part in coups and include articles that make coup treasonous and no repeal of the constitution by coup leaders.

Wow. They're really butt hurt over this.

Thailand has a long history of over-turning democratically elected civilian governments by military force.  That's just a fact. Then the last coup participants load the parliament with non-elected appointments.
Ok.  So Thailand went through the motions to look democratic, but between consolidating power through unelected legislative appointments as well as disbanding other political parties and arresting their leaders - well - unless Thailand has something America desperately wants they will probably never be invited to a "Democracy" forum.  Thailand should just be happy that the Eye Of Sauron hasn't turned its way with sanctions.  Thailand still has strategic value to the US in an A2/AD sort of way.
So Uncle Sam isn't slapping the snot out of her, he's just not inviting her to his parties.

But if you were invited, you would be gushing on and on about it in vindicated righteousness...

To become a real democracy , Thailand first has to learn to respect the results of an election . And not to block with unfair methods the opposition party that got a lot of votes ( FF ) , and not to put their own unelected cronies in powerful positions , and not to amend a constitution just to ensure to stay in power , and not to suppress demonstrations against the government that , after all , have a good reason ...

And not to use the Covid emergency just to control the population with new and illogical rules that mostly favor the government only .

No surprise they have not been invited , a slap in their face that they lost a long time ago already ...

Actions speak louder than words, Mr. Sangrat.

Yet, know one knows. As it's not truly practiced anywhere in the world.

A more astute inquiry might be to ask: What type or version of false Democracy?

Ah....yes. The class American Robber Baron era type of Democratic Corpocracy

The former German communist East called themselves a Democratic Republic as well.

Just a matter of the point of view...

Action speak louder than words. So far Thailand's actions do not show a democracy.
