The news comes as Thailand has not detected a COVID-19 case of the Omicron variant yet and the government will have business operators strictly comply with measures to prevent a new wave of the disease during New Year celebrations, according to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. Gen Prayut said that there had not been an Omicron case in Thailand but the people who had arrived from risk countries must be called to undergo repeated RT-PCR tests. Their whereabouts would be checked so that local officials would find out if there was an outbreak at their locations, he said. The WHO directive for member states (Thailand included) preparations for Omicron include: "Due to the risk of importation by incoming travelers from locations experiencing Omicron transmission, countries may increase sampling from inbound travelers. Positive rRT-PCR samples should be sequenced to confirm presence of the Omicron. National testing strategies should be updated to include available diagnostic tools for rapid testing and reporting and effective decentralization of testing. • WHO recommends that national testing capacity and genomic sequencing capabilities and appropriate planning be undertaken for possible surges in testing demand. Authorities should communicate information related to Omicron and potential implication for the public in a timely and transparent manner to further foster trust and increase acceptance of response measures. • One of the most important and effective interventions in a public health response to any event is to proactively communicate with the population what is known, what is unknown and what is being done by responsible authorities to get more information and to reduce risk. It is critical to build and foster trust, especially in contexts where there is little or no involvement of the local population in decision-making. Clear, concise and transparent risk communication, including an evidence-based rationale for adjusting measures, should be developed with communities targeted for PHSMs." https://www.who.int/publications/m/item/enhancing-readiness-for-omicron-(b.1.1.529)-technical-brief-and-priority-actions-for-member-states

It was really trending downward until we had today's spike upwards which fir a Saturday set of numbers is rare. Hopefully it is just an anomaly. Or maybe because they are sequencing some more tests as more people are stepping forward with minor symptoms they found more cases.
dinsdale
I see a very low number of ATK's. Possibly the lowest since they went down this road. As for my school, students P6-M3 were tested 2 wks ago Friday with ATK but no testing yesterday. Seems like it was a one off.

However, it is definitely short of the 70% they had hyped, and the restrictions still in place are way short of a full opening for High Season some had espoused and hoped for. Looks like the bar openings scheduled for mid January may be just wishful thinking, but then lets see what happens in the next few weeks. I can only hope that things start rolling and that Omicron is just a minor inconvenience. However, we still need to be responsible adults and so do the Thais. Today I noticed fewer and fewer wearing masks on our morning walk.

Vaccinations are the key defense for the threat of omicron and as you say there is still some way to go here with that and also the extra boosters. The UK has just ordered over an extra 100 million pfzer to help in their booster preperations. In norway there has been a super spreader event with Omicron, 120 people suspected to have it from an xmas party.

Popular Post Bkk Brian
Slow down on reopening Thailand, advises Chulalongkorn professor He cited comments made by Dr Takeshi Kasai, the World Health Organisation’s regional director for the Western Pacific, who warned countries in Asia to get ready for the Omicron variant. Since it was detected in South Africa on November 24, Omicron has spread quickly in many parts of the world, from Africa to Europe, North and South America, Oceania and Asia. Thira also said that the administering of vaccines should be efficient and up to international standards and that the government should make RT-PCR tests free nationwide. https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009614 2

Plenty of people still seem to be having fun on the beaches in the evenings, large gatherings, music and booze.
