I've heard this twice a year for 16 years.  Very little diminution in the numbers; very little police action as they rack up the overtime and compensation for having to leave their A/C offices.

EVERY day is dangerous in Thailand and will remain so until they get a police force.

Exactly this...

Each year before NYE and Songkran we have the same announcements - 7 deadly days

Each year in late Dec we have a crackdown on polluting vehicles (ignoring the field burning)

Each year in a handful of provinces around Thailand there is a crackdown on helmets

New to the addition this year is the crack down on prostitution and pedophilia.

Will we also see a crackdown on vehicle maintenance (to avoid brake failure) ?

Daily information on traffic accidents would come out at 10.15 am live from a fifth floor meeting room at DDPM HQ.

As usual, being reactive reporting the daily deaths rather than being pro-active in trying to prevent them!!

There are 365 dangerous days on Thai roads every year, judging by the daily death toll. The holidays (like New Year’s, Songkran) are just a bit more dangerous than usual. If only there was something that could be done about the dangerous traffic……

Until the police have a budget to get 400 mufti cars actually on the roads & the will to enforce the law whilst driving them,

the tents are just so they can see the screen on their mobiles.

An Authority that that year after year promotes a deadly counting festival and recommendations to locals to travel and celebrate the New Year weekend while hundreds of their countrymen die in traffic and on top of it all fornow, Covid -19 that takes almost as many lives daily. Where is the consideration, understanding, respect and restraint in their culture!

It needs political will. It isn't the police that causes crashes.

Well, it's the general Thai population's education and attitudes to driving/human life that is the cause.  So a lot more that just politics needs to be addressed.  I'm not sure if it's even something you could fix without starting from scratch, or if it's even something they'd be willing to address.

My Mrs did a  drive from Korat to Chonburi yesterday (NYE)  and said traffic was light and she made good time. Any other reports?
