Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives will consult the Commerce Ministry over a temporary ban on the export of live pigs, to ease skyrocketing pork prices which are affecting vendors and consumers.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Prapat Pothasuthon called an urgent meeting today (Wednesday), with representatives of the Livestock Development Department, the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and relevant agencies, to discuss ways to resolve the runaway pork prices problem, as they exceed 200 baht/kg today.

Talking to the media after the meeting, the deputy minister attributed the rise to the decrease in the number of pigs, especially the breeding stocks, due to African Swine Fever (ASF), which has forced pig farmers and livestock officials to cull many of their animals to prevent the further spread of the disease.

Importing more pigs is what's needed.  Pork from the US however is also rising in price.  It's not just an anomaly here in Thailand. Let's wait and here what some if the farmers on the forum think.

I don't see a shortage of pig meat on any of the stalls?

All the usual vendors I see have enough to sell...

just price gouging on the back of African swine fever.
