BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce has warned vendors that it will take legal action against profiteering following a recent spike in egg prices.

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said the Internal Trade Department is monitoring egg prices in order to lessen the impact on consumers who have already been facing rising pork prices. He said the ministry had not approved the raising of chicken or egg prices and warned business owners that unauthorized price hikes can be deemed illegal.

Wattanasak Sur-iam, director-general of the Internal Trade Department, meanwhile said an agreement was reached following discussions between the department, chicken egg producers, merchants and exporters, as well as with the Livestock Department. Farmers and egg vendors will maintain the price of their assorted chicken eggs at 3 baht per egg for six months. The Livestock Department also agreed to increase the number of laying hens in order to boost egg supplies, while the Internal Trade Department will consult with agencies about lowering production costs for chicken egg producers.

According to the Layer Chickens Association, the price of chicken eggs increased by 5-6 baht for each tray of 30 eggs on Monday due to higher costs for feed and veterinary treatments. Manote Chuthapthim, president of the association, said farmers could no longer maintain the same egg prices as before due to increased expenditures. The prices, however, are likely to fall during annual vegetarian festivities and semester breaks.

According to the association, Thailand currently has around 50 million chickens capable of laying eggs, yielding some 40 million eggs per day - the majority of which are for domestic consumption.

As with all of these things, the answer is not to put up prices to the consumers,

The answer in the modern World, is to become more efficient, and produce your product cheaper.

This is a concept of Business that Thailand does not seem to grasp, and thats why they are loosing so much FDI, and custom, to other S E Asia Nations.

The whole Country seems unable to be bough into the 21st Century, of efficiency, lean and mean, and more productivity  per head of population.

The Internal Trade Department will meet with representatives of chicken farmer, chicken egg trader and exporter associations on Thursday, to decide whether egg prices should be allowed to increase, as is being demanded by chicken farmers.

Internal Trade Department Director-General Wattanasak Sua-iam said the meeting today (Tuesday), called to discuss egg prices and ways to help ease the cost of living of consumers in the wake of rising pork prices, was not conclusive and all stakeholders agreed to return on Thursday to resolve the problem.

Executive member of the Layer Farmer Association Chaiyaporn Seethan defended the need for the price of eggs to be increased, to between 3.60 and 3.80 baht/egg, citing increased costs of animal feed, medicines and management costs.

My usual tray of 30X size 0  eggs has risen 10 baht in the last week.

So in effect the ministry said don't raise prices and the chicken farmers refused to comply.

And why exactly is that? Because veterinarians are on vacation during vegetarian festivities and semester breaks? And why would egg prices FALL during vegetarian festivities when egg consumption surely soars?

What's the excuse here. Thai pork exports are currently banned due to swine fever. There should be an oversupply in the domestic market, hence prices should be FALLING. Why is no action taken against this sort of profiteering?

Just asking questions...
