Opportunity To Be Distributor For Established Us Company. Advice Needed

Hi,

I have an opportunity to be the Thailand distributor for a US based companies products. I wan't to know what would be the easiest way to set up this business to start operating asap as I already have buyers and the company can supply the product anytime I am ready.

Thai owner and me as a partner?

Me as the sole owner? Is that possible?

What are the costs involved?

How much money would I have to have in the bank?

Basically any info to point me in the right direction for setting up a small business.

I am currently in the same situation, however, after being in Asia 30 years I have learnt NEVER to take short cuts on ventures such as this. I have had talks with Sunbelt and spent a number of hours with them yesterday tying up loose ends.

believe me in this case, money spent is very much worth it. Thailand is teeming with dodgy lawyers etc who are quite happy to take your money and sometimes get you a company operating, but dont look at today, look months or years down the line and be confident that they have done it 100% legally. Trouble is you wont know until the first hurdle presents itself !!

With Sunbelt I am happy with their advice and their expertise and feel very comfortable with them putting my affairs together

Having said.....why do people always ask for free advice from the non-specialists and then get into a situation where things have gone messy and at that point, having lost all their monies, start looking for professional help but can afford them.

Spent a bit of money on the professionals. Yeap, needing legal and professional advice or issues regarding real estate issues and or businesses for sale, use Sunbelt....they are good. But when needing PR, Marketing, Marketing Research, Promotional Strategies, Rebranding or due dilliigence just prior to closing a deal, call or PM me!

First of all I am a UK citizen currently working in Thailand and running a business in the Oil & Gas industry (yes my work permit may be a problem!) I am under no illusion of how Thai business works and already have trusted companies who will help me with the legal side of things. I am only here to find out info and previous experiences and to gather as much info as possible before I decide what I will do. I am not so stupid as to think Thai Visa is the place to come for proffesional advice on setting up a company , maybe if I was to work for Amway this would be the place I would come for advice!

But there are people here who do give good advice so I will keep TV in my favourites list when I want opinions about anything in Thailand!!

No offense, but what does it matter what the products of the business are? Buying from one company and selling in Thailand where I already have market is the business nothing nerw there (I am buying and selling these things for my current employer but this is not their core business so I know I can expand this particular area) My questions are to find out experiences from people who have gone through the process of starting a business and are doing business in Thailand.

If you have any constructive advice please share, I am eager to find out your success stories.

Since you're from UK (and thus don't qualify for special privileges) the standard procedure is to set up a Thai co.ltd company, which requires 7 founding, shareholding promoters. To make the company qualified to sponsor one foreign workpermit, you'll need 2 M baht as registered capital where 51% must come from genuine Thai investors (we're talking about the legal way, here - not how it's often done).

Costs? Sunbelt will charge you somewhere between 30 - 50 K baht depending on how much, you want them to do - (the lower end would include a perfectly set up and registered company - the higher end would include such things as visa and workpermit paperworks.

get some basic poker knowledge and play break even poker and you too can live in los wo running a buznit.

LOL - so the average English Teacher makes twice the average Thai - approx - although I do hope my Thai colleagues are outstripping most English Teachers except for those with teaching qual's at International schools

I was being slightly facetious - Depends what average - median or mean - but more on location ;-)

Starting salary for the Thai staff with little or no experience I deal with most is 40K + - oversea's education to have standard of English required so they can demand a premium. They do get good rises per annum as with only a few months experience they are being headhunted.

All girls as well as not many guys do this role except in Aussie for some peculiar reason as far as I can see.

I can accept this is not the norm though but given our requirements and a lot of others moving into the Thai market creating demand its the way it is - its not a sign of a booming economy though rather that Thailand is very cheap to do what we do.
