It will certainly work after the event.

 

The problem is that the Thai legal system is so poor it will chemically castrate a good proportion of innocent (Burmese?) people. 

 

At least with this form of castration it can be reversed after mysteriously receiving a royal pardon.

I am not sure chemical castration is a permanent solution, there is no data on this thread to say it is. OTOH, there is no room for doubt when the castration is surgical.

During my days in college and cadets, it was widely rumored we were all fed potassium bromide to inactivate our urges. If it was, IMO the effects were only short-term.

But seriously, I recall a case in the States were a long term, repeated offender was begging for the treatment and denied it, under cruel and unusual punishment grounds. It was some years ago. Maybe he finally got it. I wasn't aware some states do it and some don't.

 

One of my classes in uni was on domestic violence, and the prof said as others have, such attacks aren't for the sexual gratification, but for gratification through power and violence. Chemicals acting upon the sexual part may have no effect.

Actually that's not entirely true with either chemical or physical castration (removal of testicles) and there is still some re offending. There is also the suggestion that some of those who volunteer for chemical castration and accept the hormonal effects in return for a lesser sentence so so because they value their freedom over the hormonal effects. 

 

Also in countries where voluntary chemical castration is available a proportion of those opting for the procedure will be those who don't want to offend and want something to reduce and control the desire. This is much the same as those dealing with drug, alcohol and gambling addiction although it often seems that is more easily accepted by the public. 

They should legalize porn... Many men would watch and get rid of their hornyness, but everything in THailand must be blurred and porn is forbidden. Just like in the Victorian age. Now if men want to get rid of their needs and they don't have money to pay for it the grab what they can get..It is not only their fault., but of the policy of the Government and education

As others have said neither chemical nor surgical castration completely remove the ability for sexual activity or crime of a sexual nature but based on power and domination.

In that case, I would say anyone who  re-offends AFTER either method has forfeited their right to life.

Cuz let's be honest. Their urge is not to solve a personal or societal problem. Their urge is to shoot and kill someone. They just see this situation as a more-socially-acceptable opportunity to do so!

As I understand it because the hormonal drive is not the fundamental cause of these aberrant behaviors.

Some sex crimes are committed by individuals who are already impotent.

The problem is thought to be in the brain and elimination of testosterone isn't going to fix it.

Even still I wouldn't oppose any kind of attempt to limit these monsters from re-offending.

Many years ago, I had a conversation with an eminent criminal psychologist. He explained many criminals have been moulded by the abuse they have been subjected to when they were children, by adults who should have been nurturing them.

He did say there was a small percentage of criminals for which there was nothing in their upbringing or environment to explain their cruelty, and disregard for all forms of life. He said while it was not a term psychologists favored using, there were individuals who were pure evil. There's one leading Russia as I write this.
