Wind turbines

Featured Replies

Anybody running an on grid system with wind turbine?

Playing with the idea to run solar cells and a wind turbine on a on grid hybrid inverter.

If anyone has experience please share.

Personally I am located in khon khaen area.

Bought 8x 450w mono solar cells.

Am looking now for an inverter and had the great idea to combine solar and wind.

Suggestions and tips would be appreciated as I am a newbie on this field.

A friend in Australia thought the same but gave up as his wind turbine was nothing but trouble.
From memory he was having controller issues and balance issues as one (or more) of the blades was holding water and the resulting flexation of the mast was frankly terrifying !
Obviously different designs would eliminate this problem…

He ended up just doubling his solar array (he was fully off grid)

The idea of diversified energy production is very appealing. On windy wet days my solar output is greatly reduced and that is when wind speed is highest. At night, wind speeds are usually higher and even 500Watts would help to keep my batteries trickle charged. However I do not think that wind speeds are high enough in Thailand for a domestic setup.

Here is a video I uploaded on the topic

I have seen tests before from "small" aka household wind turbines and the results have been pretty bad . This was from a windy country ( Holland) and pretty flat and testing was done during a complete 12month period . Problems are plenty , like towers are just too small . The wind needs to be undisturbed to create good pressure on the blades . Any disturbing on the wind , like roofs , trees , ... will drastically reduce the power of wind harvested ( laminar flow vs turbulent ) .
Also , most of the time , even in a windy country , the wind does move the blades , but power generated vs investment is just not worth it . In Thailand's case , i'd say , unless you live on the coast , stick to 100% solar . If you do live on the coast , take at least 90% solar , and max 10% wind power . Do not think the numbers of the companies are real , since they are in ideal conditions ... and those are not happening . Solar in Thailand is real , it got gaps , but you can be sure it will be there again in a few hours , creating electric again .

The Mill Market in Rangsit has some small turbines in the car park.

I drive past every weekday afternoon on the way home from work. I have never seen them actually going round ????

No wind in Thailand, except during storms where there's too much wind for the turbine to work.
