Bangkok – Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Chaiwut Thanakmanusorn urged Thailand’s Tobacco Control Committee to reconsider the ban of electronic cigarettes import and sale, reasoning that it should be freely chosen by the people.

The Minister stated to the Associated Press today, April 29th, that the sales of e-cigarettes should be legalized in order to properly collect taxes. Nowadays, smokers were buying it illegally online which could easily be found on any popular social media platform.

Chaiwut continued that banning e-cigarettes sales 100% was not a solution to the social context and would also limit the rights and demands of people who want to have an alternative that was less harmful than regular cigarettes, according to several types of research.

  • Nothing to do with the digital ministry. This is a health issue and these ‘digital’ cigarettes are harmful and encourage new smokers. For once Thailand did something sensible by banning this rubbish.

As a non smoker I welcome these as being less of a problem than regular cigarettes. The smell is less offensive and I was of the impression it was just water vapour. (I could need educating on whether it is harmful to health).

So I could not be included as finding it 'offensive to the extreme'... more happy to be rid of regular cigarettes.

Smokers, or non smokers.... it doesn't matter.. The matter is that someone has the free choice to use an e cigarette or not and as always those who smoke should be aware that there are people who are bothered with it...Nothing new as with normal cigarettes..

Looking after the monopolies does not mean the customer gets freedom of choice.

Quite the opposite in reality.

Rather extreme comment.

I'm a non-smoker and as yet I've never been polluted by smokers.

You possibly may not know if you have been polluted or not, however having said this  there is a difference between something being pollutive & offensive which is what I said they are offensive to the extreme to non-smokers.

I will have to say for me. this is not the case as you make it out to be, and you should not include the plural non-smokers. This seems to be your opinion for yourself and you can't speak for all of us non-smokers that it is offensive to the extreme. I am an ex-smoker and now find myself being extremely offended when a tobacco smokers blow their smoke towards my face. I don't mind the e-cigarette smokers so much, but keep in mind these e-cigarettes are a healthier choice for people who want to quit inhaling the chemicals that are added to real tobacco.

I've got a friend who smokes cigarettes and another who puffs an e cigarette. Don't even notice the e, the other can be intrusive, even when he steps away for a drag.

Chaiwat and his cronies must have a financial interest in an e-cig company or their distributers then.

Bit naive. It’s all about protecting the  tobacco bigwigs. Look who initiated the ban.

As you say this is your opinion, I do know many non-smokers who also are offended by these items so I do feel I am allowed to use the plural in my description; maybe you will find the attached interesting - https://tobacco.ucsf.edu/more-evidence-e-cigarettes-pollute-air-and-expose-bystanders

Thanks, teacher. Don't need educated, I have read a lot of information and data and fully aware that cigarette smoke is harmful to bystanders. You are allowed to do what ever you want, of course.

Huh?

Is the "Society" part all encompassing? Or just as it applies to digital stuff?

Why is this chap even speaking?

I mean 90% of the rigs and supplies are probably sold via FB and the innerwebs, but maybe he should focus on other thailand 4.0?

so many people live here and continue to do so with the many months of open burning breathing in all kinds of chemicals and particles, vehicle emission, but get all einstien about some cigg and e-cigg smoke.

People should be aloud to smoke or not to smoke being it Tobacco ,Ganja or E Cigs same as one can drink alcohol or not ,same as driving a vehicle . they are All Dangerous in some peoples hands  .

So many people spout false-equivalencies here, apparently unaware that such a childish argument makes them look silly.

Do you propose issuing Smoking Licenses?

Anywhere? Planes, trains, buses, BTS, hospitals, schools?

Definitely suspicious.

Someone is pushing hard for this vape.

Other side is playing hard to get a piece of the action.

It'll pass and all the kids will have shiny new vape pipes easily available in a multitude of flavors like Mango, Durian, etc.

Sad.

Why a license? that's a bit over the top .

As for smoking ,anywhere outside and in ones home if one likes.

It's not a problem for me as an X smoker.

Well you're the one who compared smoking to driving...

So right outside a school, a hospital, a shopping mall, a petrol station?

There's a reason we have rules.

They are certainly less dangerous even safe to users, let alone bystanders:

Are you driving an e-car? If not then you have no case for yourself. Why should I have to breathe pollution from your car!

Well you could take your own advice, which is I think, stop breathing.

I've got no problem with people igniting questionable liquids and inhaling the resulting smoke. Freedom of choice. Just don't do it where it affects others, especially children, the elderly, those with health issues.

I mean you're free to masturbate all you want in private, but (I hope) you're not doing it in public.

As long it's only water .......

However, many or most use harmful and cancer causing flavour ingredients. ????

Like what one finds in real cigarettes?

To be honest, so long as only the user takes the risk, and there is no risk to non-users, we may be on a winner!
