Welcome back to Thailand! Airport director hands out masks and elephant dolls to tourists

Foreign tourists were in for a surprise at Chiang Mai international airport yesterday when they were greeted by airport director Wijit Kaewsaithiam bearing gifts. 

 

It was the first business day after Test and Go was scrapped and also the first flight of Air Asia (AK 856) from Kuala Lumpur after a two year pandemic hiatus. 

 

The tourists were presented with masks with lanyards - a locally made handicraft - as well as  "Captain Chang Noi" - an elephant dolly.

Tourists no longer need tests or quarantine though they have to register with Thailand Pass, a 24 hour approval process, said Siam Rath.  

 

Wijit said that 90-100 flights were arriving daily from all corners of Thailand and now from abroad as well.

Scoot Tiger Air have daily flights from Singapore and now Air Asia will run KL to Chiang Mai trips on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays with other international routes in the pipeline.

 

The director said that 12,000 to 13,000 passengers were now arriving daily with more expected soon.

Really?

Nope.  Checking arrivals at CNX for today, I count 51, a number slightly smaller than 90.  Only international flight involving CNX is the Scoot Airline flight to and from Singapore.
