Jailbreak! Three prisoners with Covid escape in NE - Thais caught but Laotian drug suspect remains at large

Sanook reported on the escape of three prisoners who were in Covid isolation on remand at Nong Khai provincial prison in the north east of Thailand.

 

The prisoners escaped from the prison hospital around midnight though their absence was only discovered at a roll call at 6.30 am.

 

Muang Nong Khai police chief Pol Col Yuthana Ngamchat sent out an APB.

 

Two Thais were found emerging from a deserted property near the PTT gas station on the Mitraphap Highway 1.5 kms from the prison.

They had managed to remove their leg shackles with pieces of an old saw they found in the house. 

 

The exhausted men were taken into custody by Lance Corporal Prawit Siphromting who was on motorcycle patrol.

The prisoners were named as Rangsiwut and Patanapong, both awaiting court verdicts in drugs' cases.

 

The third escapee is a Laotian man also in for drugs named as Sot.

 

He was the instigator of the escape, reported the media. 

 

The search for him continues with security details patrolling the Mekhong river amid fears he would try to cross the border into Laos.

The Laotian probably in Laos already - six and a half hours head start before any security patrols. Plenty of small cargo boats and ferries frequently cross the Mekong from a pier at the western end of Nong Khai promenade.
