Why do Thais burn leaves and branches?

The atmosphere will deal with it, this is how nature works. There is nothing you can do. Discussing it with your neighbors will not help.

I'm not one of the forum posters who complain about it and am actually used to it by now.

N95 masks, which we're all used to by now (except if you're one of those anti-vaxxer activists) and air purifiers do the trick. It's like dealing with snow or rain, no big deal.

Nanny state problems back in the West are much worse.

Want to change your front door or paint your house purple? You'll be destroying the character of the neighborhood and will get lectured, fined, and forced to make your house exactly the same as every other McMansion.

Some suburban homeowners have even been hassled for growing edible plants in their yards.

No loitering in front of your own house in hip-hop attire, or else the paranoid neighbors would call the cops because of a neighborhood watch mandate.

But in Thailand, you can burn all you want, let the dogs loose, dump Chang beer bottles all over your front yard, play loud music, park motorcycles anywhere. Your fence or house can be as weird as you want it to be. No one cares. "Free at last, thank God Almighty I'm free at last!"

You forgot to add you can (if you're Thai) run a business from home, starting work at 4.30 am making as much noise as you feel like.

Why do Brits eat cold pork pies and drink warm beer, and Australians have to have their Vegemite on toast? Same reason as the Thais, it's what we are brought up to do.

Don't you know that the tired old jibe about Brits and warm beer is decades out of date. Very few under 50 have ever drunk anything not ice cold and gassy.

The higher the flame, closer to the Nature Gods.  More smoke, better chance to win lottery.

Why do Churches burn incense?   worst thing for the Universe known to man!!!!

It wasn't that many decades ago when all Mom and Pops had chimneys going nuts....

We are simply living 50 years behind.  Which is why we are here!!!!!

20 baht noodle soup in the real Universe is now 100 baht!!!   be happy

In the West, we're used to the notion of romantic autumn leaves. No one would ever think of regularly burning autumn leaves every few days. Why would anyone do such a thing?

Do Thai households burn leaves simply to keep their gardens looking clean and leafless? I'm trying to understand the logic behind it.

my old man used to burn the leaves and fallen branches every couple of weeks. the stink was awful and mum used to go off at him big time. but the council didn't have a green waste collection service at the time, you had to go to the tip yourself and pay money to dump your cr@p and the old man wasn't having a bar of that.

composting was too much work I guess, plus he seemed to take great pleasure in watching the piles of cr@p burning with a glass of red wine in one hand and a ciggy in the other. maybe it's the same here? ????

More like 200 to 300 baht in Western restaurants, and the portions often aren't that big either.

We have trees and nice gardens and thus leaf raking is an every day thing... the leaves would be knee deep if we didn't - they are carried to a corner of the property and burned or there would be no place to put tomorrow's leaves... we have no nearby neighbors.

Doesn't the smoke seep into your own house though? How would you deal with the smoke that lingers around for about half an hour afterwards?

Go out for a coffee for an hour.
