'Our civilisation may not survive' Ukraine invasion, says George Soros – video

Veteran philanthropist tells World Economic Forum civilisation ‘may not survive’ what is coming

Larry Elliott Economics editor

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatens to be the “beginning of the third world war” that could spell the end of civilisation, the veteran philanthropist and former financier George Soros has warned.

In a ferocious attack on Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Soros warned that autocratic regimes were in the ascendant and the global economy was heading for a depression.

Soros, who has become a hate figure for the hard right in the US, also heavily criticised the former German chancellor Angela Merkel for cosying up to Moscow and Beijing.

Soros certainly became a lightning rod for conspiracy theories.

In point of fact, besides being (in my opinion) the greatest trader ever, he has given away upwards of $15 billion supporting things such as democracy, medical work, education, etc. The far right in the US hates him because Soros supports and stands up for the democracy and freedoms the far right hates. To borrow from Bill Maher, Soros wants to make the world free for democracy, while the US far right wants to make the world free of democracy.

One will often see him pilloried for his 'behavior' during WWII. The fact is, the war began when Soros was 9 and ended when he was 14. Might as well lambaste him for sticking gum under his 3rd Grade school desk.

He is good at weighing the odds and evolving different scenarios from those calculations. He also knows Eastern Europe quite well, which I assume includes significant knowledge of Russia. His comments should be taken seriously. putin represents the greatest threat to humanity that has ever existed, and if putin really is dying of cancer, that would make him even more dangerous.

What Soros is saying is obvious. But the worse case is not definitely the actual case.

But that said and knowing his thoughts on this are not unusual.or novel, I think he shouldn't have said them.

Why?

His name alone triggers so many haters and anti-semites.

I'm sure such lowlifes are spouting lies that it is Soros himself intentionally planning these dark outcomes.

I hope, he's wrong, but if it came to it, my bet for the reason would not be Russia, but the China-Taiwan-U.S./allies triangle.

Russia Ukraine is already a very big global deal as Ukraine is a bread basket.

You're right, of course, as for the economic repercussions, but I still think that a possible WW3 would more likely result from a Taiwan conflict.

Going by some newspaper reports today, Putin is not far away from losing power.

What we need to hope for is a moderate takes power, ends the war, pulls out all the troops, and opens constructive dialogue with their neighbors and the West

This war might actually be good for the world, with Putin gone, Russia might join the 21st century in peace.

Oh, great. A world war. Better prepare. Institute food and gas rationing, censorship, travel restrictions, and increased domestic surveillance. And don't forget that everyone is a potential spy or fifth columnist. Everything else put under a revamped War Production Board. Everybody poorer, except for the one percent and string pullers.

Soros has meddled in a lot of countries' elections (thus helping to subvert democracy - most famously over Brexit) - and has tossed much money in the direction of that famous war criminal, Tony Blair.

Perhaps his character has been best summed up by Soros himself: "I have always harboured an exaggerated view of my self-importance. To put it bluntly, I fancied myself as some kind of God".

Some of his interventions were maybe not relevant, I.e. I am not pro-Brexit, but democracy was obviously not at stake so his foundation's money would have been best spent elsewhere. However, most of his "meddling" were clearly targeted on causes and candidates which were obviously pro-democracy. Some have been successful, some not, some had later negative counter-effects, but broadly speaking it was in the right direction.

I never could stand Soros., and I wouldn't be surprised if he was working with Putin and others as they would like to go out in one big bang.

My prediction made earlier in this topic comes true.

It would be nice to see a brake down of the 40 billion earmarked for Ukraine. There is very little trust in Biden and the hard leftist. As this war is going on for such a long time Ukraine may win but at what cost if the country is turned to ash.

Please prove that assertion with a credible source if such exists. If not your post is just another typical Soros demonization conspiracy theory item.

Yes please post a credible source breakdown. Good idea.

The US support for the aid package was strongly bipartisan.

The only opposition was a faction of far right wing ultra maga isolationalist Putin sympathizers.

With or without Soros over million people killed every year.

In short humanity in war with itself nonstop.

Just for the record, that bill for small businesses was blocked by the Republicans. Only 5 voted to enable its passage.

I know what you mean.   In the Senate the vote was 89-11. Given that there are 50 Republicans senators...well I'll leave you to ignore the the rules of arithmetic. As for the House, 57 Republicans voted against it. Given that there are 210 Republican members of the House...more math for you not to come to terms with...

So it has not been blocked by friends of Soros but by the GOP. The preferred party for Wombat, I guess! ????

That's what happens when people re-post Right-wing Internet memes without checking facts! ????

The most funny is that the guy cited in the meme Billy Prempeh is  GOP congressional candidate! ????

Warmongers are now trying to convince Ukraine that they can win, but this is just not possible. No contry can win a war with a country with the most nuclear warheads in the world. If Putin or his mad generals decide to deploy tactical nuclear weapons what the US would do? Absolutely nothing. Most of the Russian top commanders were raised and trained in the USSR times, human lives don't matter much to them. Unfortunately Ukraine is on the way to lose significant chunks of its territory. Realpolitik.

Yeah sure and Putin was going to take Kyiv and de-Nazify Zelinsky in 3 days.

Germany gained a lot of territory as well during the war, for a few years. Then it lost more than it previously had.

The nukes changed everything. Suppose the Ukrainians start gaining ground, what are the chances they are going to get striked with nukes? Nobody thought Putin would dare to attack Ukraine, but he did. And if this happens the world turmoil will be huge.

About as likely as seeing one for all the money BLM received. Once the money reaches Ukraine, there is no accounting

Firstly, everybody thought Putin would attack Ukraine and Biden correctly said so for weeks. Russia may well use tactical nuclear weapons to defend Crimea, probably not Donbas in my opinion. If they do they will be bombed directly by NATO, on Russian soil. NATO will make the calculation that Russia will not use large scale nuclear weapons under any circumstances. The fact that Russia has not yet used tactical nuclear weapons means they probably won't.

You mean the money from donors? A few million at best? Like a drop in the ocean compared to the dark money super pacs. We'll never see any accounting for that either. The US doesn't just cut a check to Ukraine and tell it to go shopping either. This is the big foreign aid myth.

Censorship - done. Travel restrictions - done. Increased surveillance - done.

Rationing is on the way...
