BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Police (RTP) has issued an order for all police nationwide to monitor for possible Iranian spies following an arrest in Indonesia that prompted security concerns.

All related security agencies have reportedly been instructed to closely monitor the movements of Iranian nationals and certain Thai Muslims suspected of conducting espionage work in the kingdom.

National Police Chief Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk said an order was issued to the RTP’s Special Branch, the Central Investigation Bureau, the Metropolitan Police Bureau, and all nine Provincial Police Regions to maintain vigilance.

According to officials, the arrest of an Iranian operative in Indonesia has already caused concern among a number of nations regarding Iran’s clandestine activities.

As Thailand is scheduled to host the APEC Summit in November, the RTP assured that security measures will be prioritized to prevent violent incidents. It also urged the public to maintain vigilance and immediately report any suspicious activity.

What precious state secrets are these illustrious spies hoping to steal?

  • More fanciful stuff ordered at a whim by the puppet and the puppet master no doubt as an excuse to extend the state of emergency in perpetuity if they could no doubt.

According to the other EL paper this morning the order that went out to the police was a secret order.   However it was made known to the press for transparency reasons. My words.

Perhaps how much money the home produced AZ vaccine made for some ???? or even how many real tourists really did visit Thailand this year ????.    To name but two

Enough to scare off any potential Iranian spies!

Just what are hey coming to spy on?

Potential bargains in Go Go bars?

only in Thailand would the buffoons attempt to convince others that they are buffoons

i don't know what Iranian want to spy on Thai for, the girls and night life maybe, or is it the durian. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's good they let them know.

Why surprise them?

I would think it's more about what they're buying from the free market.

Lets not forget that Iran is a heavily sanctioned country.

wear masks, sunglasses and a hat..... Chinese, Russian, Iranian, American, European. Human Rights. UN, every one who is not Thai could be a spy......

i read in max hasting's book 'the secret war', a recommended read by the way, that during WW2 there were around 1000 japanese spies in thailand, and not one was ever caught.

What is the problem? With thaipass data, immigration entry data, digital foto, scanned fingerprints, TM 6 and TM30 data it must be easy to identify and catch them.

Iranian spies must be shaking in their boots now the BIB are being set onto them.

The usual disguise doesn't work so well when so many people in your country look like this:

Go south and you will find plenty.

Malaysia is quite friendly to Iranians, and LOS LE is quite receptive to cash donations.  Not a good combination.  Yet another case of "the fault is not in the foreigners, but in ourselves."  (apologies William S.)

The old timers in here might recall the incident, maybe 10 or so years ago, when an Iranian with a bomb in a suitcase blew his legs off on a Bangkok street, I think it was in Thonglor.

Also around that time it seemed hardly a day passed without a report from Swampy that they caught yet another Iranian trying to smuggle ice.  Gave the impression they were selling the stuff at the duty-free.

You forgot to mention the BMW Smart Cars!

A load of very poor PR for the RTP...spies in Thailand...? Just disappear them like other unwanted people!

A few years ago I was asked by a certain Thai government agency to attend a seminar in Chiang Mai.

They said while I was there could I discuss with some representatives from Iran about possible collaboration on a satellite program

Of course I refused

The RTP would be better just asking other government departments what meetings have been arranged.
