Monkey business and the battle over Thailand’s multibillion-baht coconut industry

For more than a century, Thai southerners have raised and trained monkeys to climb high trees and collect ripe coconuts for them. However, this traditional way of life is now under intense scrutiny after being condemned by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as “animal abuse”.

Studies show that, in the Asia Pacific region, one and a half years ago, the cost of an energy-sufficient diet was approaching one dollar per person per day. The cost of a healthy diet per person per day had exceeded 3.50 dollars. That makes healthy food unaffordable for many people when the poverty line is 2 dollars per day. (Photo by AFP)

Thailand’s national lottery to consider increasing digital ticket sales

The board of the Government Lottery Office (GLO) will consider increasing the number of digital tickets available for sale online, after tickets for the June 16th and July 1st draws sold out in four days and just over two days respectively.

Phuket Zoo closes with a new life for rescued tigers at Phetchaburi’s WFFT

Surya Tanthavevong, owner of the Phuket Zoo, said it was unlikely he would ever return to running the zoo, even if tourists returned in large numbers.  “Phuket Zoo is closed. We are now planting coconut trees in the area to change the use of the land.  The area of the former zoo was 30 rai [4.8 hectares]. We are turning the whole area into a coconut plantation,” Surya stated.

Police at the scene with 50-year-old Canadian Joseph S. on Saturday morning after his 49-year-old wife was killed tragically in a freak road traffic accident when a pickup driver, travelling at speed, hit Mrs Marine S. as she cycled after her husband while crossing the road near a resort they were staying at in Kanchanaburi.

National — Mr. Panthep Puaphongphan, Spokesperson for the Health Ministry’s Public Relations on Cannabis, stated on Facebook, June 18th, that the sale of cannabis to minors under the age of 20, breastfeeding women, and pregnant women must be granted permission from the Director-General of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

Foreign man injured after being attacked with a sharp weapon in a fight with second foreigner near Walking Street
