Starting today (Monday), motorists or motorcyclists who refuse or fail to pay fines associated with traffic tickets may face arrest, said Deputy Commissioner of Metropolitan Police Bureau Pol Maj Gen Jirasan Kaewsang-ek.

 

He said police will ask the courts to issue warrants for the arrest of alleged offenders who fail to pay fines after being warned once and served twice with summonses.

 

He also warned that those who face arrest may have their names recorded in police criminal records and in the central data base of the Provincial Administration Department, which could mean that they have problems at immigration when wishing to travel abroad and could be deprived of some rights when conducting legal transactions or even when applying for jobs.

It's another of those "may" again. What they mean is that they may face arrests if the police bribe is insufficient

Until now: "Here's a traffic violation fine. There's no recourse if you decide not to pay it."

The future: "Here's a traffic violation fine. You should pay it, or you will be in more trouble." (like the civilized world has been for decades!)

Why not just add it to the car tax !

Aint no dodging that, and clearly visible if you try.Any outstanding fines are collected at the same time or the car is off the road.

An empty threat and everyone knows it.

They will just not pay the tax and get another fine that they won't pay. ????

and how many cars (and motorcycles) are displaying out of date tax discs, in my locality it would appear to be about 15% and a number especially motorcycles show no disc at all

It could of work of course and some countries do do it that way Egypt is one that I know of. But in doing it that way there's a mental disconnect between the crime and the fine.

 

If you just have to stump up a sum of money at the end of the year, you would tend not to associate it with the offences. In your mind it would simply be added to the cost of motoring. There's no real punitive punishment involved.

 

However the threat of arrest, handcuffs, jail cells and court appearances. Now that has a whole different ring to it. More complex, but hopefully much greater impact.

 

Something certainly something needs to be done about errant motorists who just jerk 2 fingers at the authorities.

Interesting concept.  I wonder what Thailand would be like with people aware of there being consequences to their actions.  In some ways better and in some ways worse?

I don't think the highway dept and land / transport department are linked so unlikely this can happen.

I wish... Thailand would be like 20 years ago again. Nice 'n easy. And not trying to become a bad copy of the Western world.

So how many new prisons are to be built to accommodate these thousands of fine dodgers?

Well they will not pay the tax, problem solved, TIT why pay if you can get away with it 

Just to say that in order to enforce all those latest silly and dumb laws and orders Thailand should deploy a million strong police force, given that at least half of them would have to be honest...

Better just wheel clamp the car till they pay the fine. 

Why not do what most other countries do?  You have so much time to pay, be it 30 or 60 days, then if not payed, you have to pay it at your next license renewal / registration "plus" the interest. 

It isn't hard to do and implement for most.....but again.....THIS IS THAILAND!!!!

Block access to smartphone until paid.

I remember in the late nineties in Saudi Arabia there was the same problem after they started the automatic speed cameras and fines. One Naval officer I knew panicked because he had to go to Bahrain on official duties, yet he owed more than 6,000 Riyals in speeding fines ( about 58,000 Baht).....and was banned from travelling abroad until he paid it..........

"But I already paid the other nice Officer who offered me a discount for cash??"

I can't see it happening as the Hilton's are full to bursting already so there's no room at the inn.

That is actually easy to avoid you just put the car in y our wife's name.

 

That being said it is not a bad idea.

 

The other point to scare them is that the insurance company will be notified as well.  Depending on the fines not paid insurance will increase.

 

At least they are trying to do things right.

 

The methodology may be a little off but the idea is great

My lovely wife, a highly educated and responsible business executive also has a lead foot. The cameras nail her constantly and our in-box overflows with speeding tickets. Her response when I bug her to pay them is “why bother, none of their data bases are connected so who’s to know?” I suspect that the vast majority of Thais like her just ignore them as there are no consequences. 

Again a stern thread " you better or go to jail " result why millions unpaid ticket resulting in camera violation. 

The constant barking of Soi Dogs! 

Quite rightly so, arrest and jail them, all those nonchalantly bragging how they do not pay for their traffic offences as if the law does not apply to them.
