Why a sidecar, wouldn't one of these be more practical?

Readily available everywhere in Thailand, and probably a lot cheaper too.

Don't know about readily available, never seen one like that in Phuket.   Here's new ones for sale, 3500 baht, unfortunately in Kanchanaburi not Phuket.   https://www.facebook.com/groups/1454000551577152/permalink/3122809284696262/

These are very common. They're usually not attached to the motorbike, so they can also be used as a pushcart. To use with a motorbike, you take an empty rice sack, fold it in half and put the handle inside the fold, then sit on the rice bag - sounds dodgy, but it really works.
