US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, met with Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Don Pramudwinai, on Sunday, as part of his Southeast Asia tour.

Prime Minister Prayut said that he is pleased that close bilateral relations with the United States continue, especially as next year will mark the 190th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. He also said that it is important now to push cooperation, not only between Thailand and the United States but also with ASEAN member countries, in areas such as public health and climate change.

Blinken said that the United States is committed to ASEAN centrality and to their own partnership with the region. He also said that he appreciates Thailand’s leadership of APEC, during which a summit will take place in November, and that Thailand is an original member of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

The signing in Bangkok Sunday of the Communique on Strategic Alliance and Partnership and the Memorandum of Understanding to Promote Supply Chain Resilience, between Thailand and the United States, will deepen the alliance and partnership between the two countries and lay out new areas in which the two nations can work more closely together, said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

Blinken flew into Bangkok last night for his first official visit to Thailand since his appointment, following the G20 leaders’summit in Bali. A discussion was held this morning with Thailand’s Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai.

The communique, he said, will open up new areas in which the US and Thailand can work, such as promoting clean and renewable energy technologies, including electric vehicle and carbon capture technologies.

I expect Blinken/Biden offering USA strategic oil reserves to show what side of the fence Thailand should lean.

Can Thailand promise much to the USA? Thailand's geographical proximity to China means the country cannot take a side. Historically, trying to work both sides of the fence has worked and economic relations have been good. Not sure what the Americans want more than that. Can't be to sell submarines.
