Thailand 'hopeful' for peace in South

Kuala Lumpur (dpa) - Thailand's Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas on Thursday defended the military government's conciliatory approach to resolving increasing violence in the south, and expressed optimism that issues in the region would soon be resolved.

Boonrawd, who was in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur for annual border talks, dispelled criticism that Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont's conciliatory policy was not working, as violence in the southern provinces has been on the increase.
