I am attemping to get to Koh Samui in mid July. My travel plans are not set in stone so I am open to suggestions and am flexible on how I get there. I will be in Cambodia (Siem Reap) and would like to get to Koh Samui within about 3 days. We can either fly from Siem Reap to Samui via wherever (could be BKK or we could connect onto a different airline - say, Air Asia - to Surat Thani and take a boat to Koh Samui) or enter Thailand and fly from within (Pattaya? Bangkok?) to Samui (or, like I said, via a close destination such as Surat Thani). Any suggestions are welcome. I'll be with my girlfriend and a day or two detour isn't out of the question.

Thanks

I believe you have multiple choices depending on budget and how adventurous you wish to be.

The easiest way is to fly from Siem Reap to Bangkok and fly straight on down to Samui.

You can fly to Bangkok and on to Surat Thani on various airlines or you can take a bus or train down.

If you choose the bus option try and get the morning bus, usually around 08.00, so you can have a good look at the scenery. Depending on weather schedule 8-14 hours.

I may well be wrong but the only train I ever used to Surat wasto get me to Nakhon Si Thammarrat was an overnight one. It left around 18.00 and arrived in Surat at 06.00 ish.

Whichever you transport you choose you take a VIP bus via Donsak and the ferry which will take you over to Samui.

These are the direct routes but if you have time there is no reason why you can't take the bus to Chumphon, stay a day or two then Hua Hin, then Cha Am and on to Surat Thani. Just working your way down the west Gulf coast at your own pace.

Lots of previous posts about these towns for you to read.

(N.B It is worth checking on the baggage allowance on the budget airlines as most are either 15 or 20kg only.)

The adventurous way.

I believe that it is possible to get from Siem Reap to Bangkok but I have never done it but intend to try the next time I am in Cambodia.

Please see Steve Suphan's report.

Good luck, enjoy yourself and keep smiling.
