He could have chosen not to insinuate 'planting' of evidence, but that's exactly what he did. Any concilitory tone now reeks of self-preservation and that's if you are blind enough to see it that way as you could just as easily see this as a thinly veiled threat along the lines of 'you better back off as I'm the only one who can calm my rabid followers.'
