The Royal Thai Police is considering issuing a traffic sub-law of no more than three passengers allowed to be sitting in the back seats of a pickup truck and no more than six passengers allowed in a cargo bed.

Police General Damrongsak Kittipraphat, the deputy national police chief, stated during a road traffic conference on Friday, August 19th, that the Royal Thai Police is in discussion with the Department of Land Transport to enact a sub-law for pickup truck users and passengers under the same Road Traffic Act (No. 13) which order all passengers in vehicles to wear seat belts throughout the journey, to be effective on September 5th.

The draft will prohibit more than three passengers from sitting in the back seats of pickup trucks for safety as most of them did not provide proper seat belts. Additionally, the number of passengers sitting in the pickup’s cargo bed will be limited to a maximum of six people, and sitting at the cargo rear will be strongly prohibited.

  • What is a "Sub-law"? Either a law is a law or it is not! When did any authority, except in dictatorships, have laws passed outside of a duly elected Parliament?     Oops; Sorr

  • Limiting the per incident death qouta is a great idea.   Could reduce it even further by enforcing existing laws !!

  • It probably just means that it will be advisory, not mandatory so the police don't have to actually in force it, unless they are short of cash or the perpetrators are farangs...

Not sure why there should be a limit, you can clearly see riding in the bed of a pickup truck provides far more protection than on a motorcycle here in Thailand

Either a law is a law or it is not!

Zero in the bed unless it is a Subaru brat which has 2 seats and belts

Special permit and govt approved cargo seating while transporting  workers up here in the northeast !” And it would be more revenue for the transportation ministry!

They already have laws for too many people on a motorbike ! They don’t enforce it. Sad

Too many laws....

What's the point in enforcing child seats inside if six can sit unrestrained in the bed TiT at its most reckless.

They call the 2 door pickups back seats cargo rear,  they don't have seatbels fitted as standard.

Since when did the POLICE make up the law? They're there to enforce it, nothing more.

So you can have 3 children in the rear cargo, six children in the bed legally that's 9 unrestrained children in one vehicle.  But if you have one five year old wairing a seat belt in the back of a car not in a child seat you can be fined.

I hope they’re not proposing to abolish the baht bus, the world’s best public transport system.

SUB LAW.

So no more than the crew compliment of a Chinese sub allowed to ride in the back?

Sounds like a good PLAN.

I think it is something to do with being able to buy submarines without engines.

I've seen school mini buses up here with about twenty kids sitting on bench seats going length ways with nothing at all to hold on to.

Its a law without any engines I think ????

Sounds like the sense of this was lost in translation as it makes no sense.

All new laws are enacted to benefit the police.  They then decide which to enforce and when  and on who(m?).

I think open mouth, speak rubbish and then place FOOT in mouth and say it is okay we are the POLICE . Seems the order of the day !!

a Sub-law is a 'Regulation'.

That's hilarious, because it legalises riding in the cargo bay, while seat belts would be mandatory on the front seats.. Only in Thailand..

So we can no longer expect to see headlines such as "Hilux runs off road, 4 dead and 22 injured".

"sub-law"

Def: a law used to torpedo another law

How about in the back bench seat of my pickup then too! I got pilloried for saying I sometimes have passengers in there!

Not to mention those on the roof

I'm sure a while back they said they were making it illegal to ride in the cargo bed. My wife mentioned it as well and I said I thought it was already illegal but not enforced.
