House Speaker to submit petition concerning PM’s term to Constitutional Court on Monday

Chuan Leekpai, President of Thailand’s National Assembly and House Speaker, is expected to submit the opposition parties’ petition to the Constitutional Court today (Monday), to seek a ruling on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s 8-year term in the office, claimed by the Opposition and some academics to come to an end on August 24th this year.

 

In the petition, the Constitutional Court is also asked to order the prime minister to cease his work and duties as prime minister.

 

Meanwhile, the Election Commission will separately consider submitting a similar petition from political activist Srisuwan Janya.

 

The Election Commission has three options in dealing with Srisuwan’s petition. They could drop the petition, because the Court will have received the opposition’s petition, probably today.

 

Alternatively, they could reject the petition on the grounds that there is no issue, because the prime minister’s term has not yet expired, or they could forward the petition to the Constitutional Court.

Fourth option: dissolve the entire EC.

No one will miss it.

Might as well reorganize it under the Office of the Prime Minister.

When Gen. Prayuth overthrew the elected government in 2014 and abolished the 2007 Constitution until elections in 2019, the EC remained intact (junta even extending judges service time in violation of any constitution) despite elimination of elections. Tells one how much the EC contributes to a democratic regime - nothing.

So he will submit a petition to the constitutional court on Monday 22nd regarding the ending of Prayuts term in office on 24th?

He's 68 years old.  Way over the normal retirement age of 60.
Time to put him out to pasture. Or perhaps, what is good for the goose (commoners) isn't good for the gander (Prayut).
