Bangkok gets tough with motorcyclists riding or parking on pavements

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is getting tough with motorcyclists who either ride or park on the capital’s pavements, with fines of up to 5,000 baht.

 

According to a press release from the BMA, during the initial stage of enforcement, offenders will face a fine of 500 baht which will, eventually, be increased to as much as 5,000 baht.

 

If the offenders are caught on CCTV, they will receive a notification, sent to their residence, instructing them to pay the fine within 15 days, failing that they will receive a second notice, followed by legal action if they still fail to pay.

OMG, what will the BMA do with all that revenue? 

 

When walking on the footpath in BKK it seems every corner you turn there's an idiot riding on the footpath.

Easy solution get the motorcycle police to ride on the pavements/sidewalks to catch them, after all the police are part of the problem, riding there themselves and also with their "no see" attitude unless you pay them.

major city with no forward planning for capacity, if only they could do it all over again..........................to late

 

all the roads and city streets should have been at least x2 the width - Bangkok has become a horrible place to drive even on a motorbike, it didn't need to be that way if there was a bit of sensible thought and planning from the start, but no - they know best............seems they don't

Not very effective when there are so many bikes that have no registration plate or whose registration/ownership has expired. 
 

Time to seize unregistered bikes and crush them if not legit. Only measure that works for unregistered or uninsured vehicles in U.K.

Weird sounding headline, in the US we don't call the sidewalks pavements, that's mostly what we call roads and parking lots. Technically anything that's paved can be called a pavement. But then the sidewalks in Bangkok are made of ceramic tiles, so what's up with that? They just finished replacing a whole lot of them all along Ratchaprarop and nearby streets. You can see those tiles in the photo.

I suggest at least half the drivers who are now every day in their cars alone should switch to motorcycles. Then there would be less cars and more bikes but all together they would fit a lot better on the existing streets. Win/win.

A bit of proper marking on the road would go a long way in lower Sukhumvit where I see the bikes on the sidewalks constantly.

 

A lot of traffic jams are started and propagated by just one or two vehicles doing something stupid. Like cars stopping in the left lane, which makes hundreds of cars behind change lanes to get through.

 

Or cars getting jammed up at the U turn areas. If there was a protected turn-only lane, then when somebody misses his turn he can't block another lane trying to get into queue.

You Americans would get really confused if you knew much of the world calls them footpaths.

Motorbikes belong on the road with the petrol guzzling taxis (you know petroleum is a liquid, not a gas don't you?), where they are at risk of getting hit by a car bonnet and ending up on the boot.

+1 on this sentiment, only need to add in that last evening the GF and I almost became flattened by a moto taxi driver riding on the sidewalk (Foot Path), and a few seconds later by a grab delivery rider, and they were driving the wrong way even on the sidewalk......but wait for it.....this was all done in front of the RTP running the traffic box at Rama 4 rd, and Sathorn Thai Rd.....in plain view as the police officer standing in the lane watched and did nothing......

Here in BKK we do have bicycle lanes on the bigger streets but cars use them to drive in as well as motorcycles and so the Bicycles use the sidewalks, and then the lazy motorbike riders who do not want to be inconvenienced by having to drive a few 1000 meters further they ride the wrong way.  If the flipping police would do their jobs then traffic would be less of an issue and accidents reduced as well.

Maybe something to do with very low pay for the police, I believe they start on around 8,000 Baht pm. (They also have to pay for their own firearm (probably at massively inflated prices)).
