I'm a farang living in Thailand on a work permit. I'm also married to a Thai. I would like to bring my parents (both 70+ in age) to Thailand for a long stay (1-2 years) to attend to several health problems my parents are currently facing. I would like to get some input from experts on this forum on the visa options available to my parents.

Since my parents are fairly advanced in age, I'm particularly interested in visa options that do not require going in & out of Thailand many times a year. Of course it would be best if I could get my parents permanent residency, but I suppose the options there are limited since I myself am not yet eligible for permanent residency in Thailand. Anyone has any info on the "retirement visa" and how that might apply to my parents' case?

Thanks,

Seri1

This is a not a problem as long as you have a extension of stay permit yourself. If you do, they do not need to travel and do not need to meet any money requirements.

Thanks for your reply. It's not clear what you mean by "extension of stay permit". I've a valid work permit that has been extended for a second year. Please explain, or provide a contact email where I can follow up further.

Do you have to leave Thailand every 90 days and return to get a new 90 day permitted to stay stamp? That would be a visa entry and not be helpful.

You need to be here on a one year extension of stay from Immigration. That means you are allowed to remain in Thailand for one year and that you should report your address to immigration every 90 days and if you leave Thailand you must have a re-entry permit to return and keep your extension alive. Three years of this status and you are allowed to apply for permanent residency. If this is what you have then your parents can come as Sunbelt advised and obtain one year stays like you.

Your work permit has been extended for a year. It is a pre-requisite that you previously had the permission to stay stamped into your passport extended by another year. This is what Sunbelt is referring to. Sometimes it is referred to as extending a visa for a year. Maybe your employer did this for you.

The procedure would be for your parents to apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa based on visiting family. With this they will receive permission to stay for 90 days on arrival in Thailand. After about 2 months they can apply in Thailand for their stay to be extended. The permission to stay will be extended to correspond with the leave by date in your passport. After you extend in subsequent years they too can apply to stay for additional years.

Permanent residency is not on the card for your parents, but if you stay they need never leave Thailand again.

When applying for your extension Immigration would have been given details of your income. As Sunbelt says there is no additional income requirement. However if you are on modest salary I recommend your parents be prepared to produce evidence of their income/savings.

Edit. Apologies Lopburi. You posted whilst I was drafting this

Thanks much for the clarifications. Very helpful indeed. Would you recommend any experienced Immigration Lawyers (Sunbelt?) in Bangkok that provide full end-to-end assistance with the paperwork, process and filings for non-immigrant O visa?

If I were employed here I would use them as there are just too many variables that are changing frequently to waste your own time by not knowing the current requirements. For those of use retired the paperwork is much less and we have the time to do it again if we get it wrong - but even then there are some where use of a legal firm would be advisable do to personality or infirmities.
